#1: Sonic Mania (2017)
Sonic Mania was released on the PS4, XOne, Switch, and PC and has everything you would hope to find in a Sonic game. The story follows Sonic and his companions Tails and Knuckles as they set out to defeat their nemisis Doctor Eggman and his robotic henchmen, the Hard-Boiled Heavies. Sonic Mania takes place over twelve levels, called zones and features eight remixed zones that consist of both new elements and recycled gimmicks and ideas from previous Sonic the Hedgehog games and four entirely new and original zones. In 2017 Sonic Mania was the Nintendo Switch's best selling game.
#2: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was released on Genesis and is where the series took its first major step toward being what it is today. This entry in the Sonic series introduced Sonic's sidekick, Miles 'Tails' Prower and follows them as they try to prevent series antagonist Dr. Ivo Robotnik from stealing the Chaos Emeralds to power his space station, the Death Egg. Generally considered one of the best games in the series Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was remastered and rereleased on iOS and Android in 2013.
#3: Sonic Rush (2005)
Sonic Rush was released on the Nintendo DS and is similar to earlier games in the series as it followed the interwining adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and a new character, Blaze the Cat. Although Sonic Rush is a 2D platform game, the sprites of Sonic and Blaze are rendered in 3D which creates a 2.5D effect. Boss battles, along with a Sonic-exclusive special stage, are entirely 3D.
#4: Sonic Generations (2011)
Sonic Generations was released on PS3, XBox 360, and PC and is remembered as the game that featured two Gameplay styles in 'Classic' which was a side -scrolling perspective like that of the original Sega Genesis games and 'Modern' which was 3D levels similar to those found in Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors. Sonic Generations re-imagines the most popular aspects of the franchise in high-definition and each boss in the game is one previously seen in an earlier entry in the series. Sonic Generations was also the entry when the Sonic games turned the corner and started becoming a comercial success again.
#5: Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)
Sonic the Hedgehog was released on Genesis and is the game that started it all. Although it now appears dated in comparison to the other Genesis games that followed it is still one of the best Sonic games ever made. The game was also commercially successful and established Genesis as a key player in the 16-bit era and allowing it to compete with Nintendo and their Super Nintendo Entertainment System console.
