Later in the game, you will be able to upgrade the players you have unlocked as well as the main character. Each of your main character's teammates can have their skills and abilities upgraded to improve their performance on the pitch. Resist the temptation to equally spread upgrade points across all players and instead focus on the players that really need to play well. Prioritize upgrading the goalkeeper first to ensure the opposition doesn't score easy goals. After that boost the speed and shooting ability of your striker as the AI defenders in Soccer Story are good at tackling and you will need to outrun them.

In each area of Soccer Story, there are coins you can find which can then be used for upgrades to improve the abilities of your players. Some coins can easily be found while others are obtained by shooting through invisible goals, with small golden statues nearby that give you a hint. Other coins are gained by sliding on the ground in areas that have little graphical shimmers or sparkles. You can see how many coins remain to be collected in each area by checking the summary on the map.

Make sure you take the time to speak to the NPCs that you encounter in Soccer Story as doing so will frequently result in a small side-quest or extra objective which once complete will reward you with items, upgrades, or coins which can help to boost needed stats and skill that unlock further areas of the game.

The map in Soccer Story is useful, it will tell you where you are and where you have been. There are also stats showing how many collectibles are remaining in each area. Make sure you check the map frequently to make sure nothing is missed.
