The story of Shovel Knight Dig takes place before Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope and starts with Shovel Knight having his loot stolen by Drill Knight and The Hexcavators. In Shovel Knight Dig you traverse downwards through a cavern set across different environments that are divided up into three acts. Below is a list of the different themes and the knight you will encounter in each of them.
- Mushroom Mines (Spore Knight)
- Secret Fountain (Mole Knight)
- Smeltworks (Tinker Knight)
- The Grub Pit (Hive Knight)
- Magic Landfill (Scrap Knight)
Below is a collection of hints and tips that will help you to progress in the game. These include why you should complete the online daily and weekly challenges and why you should collect the golden gears.
There are no difficulty settings in Shovel Knight Dig, instead there are various assist features you can tweak if you discover the rougelike experience is too challenging for you. These assist features become available once you enter the dungeon and pause the game. They include increasing health and slowing down the game's speed.
It is important to remember that there are no checkpoints in Shovel Knight Dig, this means if you end a run in the middle of a dungeon you will be transported back to the hub world upon reloading. You will retain some of the gems you acquired but everything else will have disappeared as if your character had died.
Don't forget the online activities where you can compete in leaderboards for daily and weekly challenges. These dungeons are worth doing as the gems that you acquire during these runs count towards your treasure count as they normally would in a run. Keep in mind that although you can get decent rewards from these randomized dungeons you will also find them tougher.
Always keep an eye out for the golden gears that are in dungeons because when you manage to collect three of them before you need to take a fork in the road you will unlock a bonus item. You are given the choice of a chicken to refill health or a mystery prize which usually takes the form of a relic or an accessory of some sort. Until you reach the boss of the level it is recommended that you always choose the chicken to refill your health in order to be prepared for the battle.
As you traverse the dungeons you need to keep an eye out for notches and blemishes in the wall as these will guide you to secret passages. These passages are worthwhile looking for as they can reveal a horde of gems or an NPC which can help you in some way. One of which is a mole chef that can heal your character and increase their health.
When your character dies in Shovel Knight Dig you are given the option to either return to the surface or continue into a new run. More often than not it is more beneficial to go back to the surface as there will be surprises awaiting you. These may be new story beats, like an earthquake, or new inventory options that appear in the shop.
If your character dies in Shovel Knight Dig they will retain most of the gems they acquired on the run. The game will give you a chance to try and retrieve the gems you lost as you fly around the dungeon in bags. Everything else, including any relics or accessories you obtained in the run are lost. The upgrades to health and magic meters will also reset themselves.
