Got a cheat or hot tip for this game? Found a secret, or a strategy for success?

Explore Everywhere

It is essential that you explore everywhere as you play Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster as there are plenty of hidden Mystical Chests scattered throughout the map for you to find and benefit from. Talk to NPCs to learn lore that will come in useful but also be prepared to fight as some of these NPCs will initiate combat with you in certain areas. Exploring will also enable you to discover junk shops, terminals, and unlock features like the Fountain of Life and the Cathedral of Shadows. Make sure while you are exploring the world you pay attention to the color flashing on your compass as this indicates how far away you are from an encounter. If the compass starts flashing red it indicates you are close to an encounter whereas if it flashes purple you do not need to worry as you are in a safe zone.

How to get Deathstones

Some demons in Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster can only be acquired through Deathstone fusions. Deathstones are cursed stones that call upon forces of death. Being in possession of Deathstones and depending on the phase of the moon can alter the outcome of fusions by allowing you to unlock members of the Fiend race instead.

You will be able to find Deathstones throughout the Kalpa Dungeons. Just having Deathstones in your inventory is all that is required for them to affect your fusions. If you have a fusion that has been affected by a Deathstone it will be indicated by a skull instead of the usual circles or triangles on the fusion chart.

Buy Drinks at the Vending Machines

When you are at Yoyogi Park Station and Shinjuku Medical Center make sure you find the vending machines that are there and buy drinks from them. It is important that you do this because once the conception takes place and things are reborn in different ways these drinks will turn into strong healing items that will help you considerably in upcoming battles.

Adjust the Difficulty

Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remastered features three difficulty settings, these are Merciful, Normal, and Hard. If you are new to the game or just want to play casually it is recommended that you play on the Merciful difficulty setting which will allow you to experience the story without having to endlessly grind Macca and experience points.

When you play the Merciful difficulty setting the enemies are weaker and the encounter rates lower. You will also take less damage, deal more damage and earn experience points and Macca at a faster rate enabling you to level up and purchase key items quicker. In order to access the Merciful difficulty setting you must download the Merciful DLC Pack which is free. You will be able to change the difficulty of the game during gameplay by going to the main menu or from the command menu. Simply select 'Config', navigate to the 'Game' tab, and look for the 'Difficulty' option.

Stock up on Beads, Life Stones, and Macca to Recruit Demons

In Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster you will need to recruit a party of demons. When you encounter a demon they will generally ask for either items, Macca, or sometimes HP in exchange for their allegiance. It is therefore important that you stock up on Beads, Life Stones, and Macca. There will be instances where even with all demands met, the demon leaves or offers an item instead of their allegiance. For a demon to join your party you need to be the same level or higher. Also, other demons might get annoyed you are talking to their allies and interrupt by attacking you, so it is recommended before you initiate negotiations you knock out all but one demon.

Pay Attention to the Phases of Kagutsuchi

The post-apocalyptic world of Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remastered is dominated by Kagutsuchi, a celestial being in the center of the Vortex World who radiates energy that affects several mechanics in the game. Kagutsuchi acts like a lunar cycle that starts from the New Moon Phase, eventually becoming a Full Moon, then reverting back to a New Moon.

During the New Moon Phase demons are easier to negotiate with and more likely to join your party. This will change when it is the Full Moon Phase, during this time demons will be more aggressive and less likely to negotiate or let you run from a battle. The fuller Kagutsuchi is, the more damage demons will do during battle and your chances of getting a rare item from a treasure chest will increase substantially. You will also be able to sacrifice more demons at the Cathedral of Shadows to increase the power of the demons you are fusing. You can keep track of the different phases of Kagutsuchi by looking in the top-left corner of your screen, and it is important that you do so.

Pay Attention to the Phases of Kagutsuchi

Manage your Magatama

Magatama in Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD is a parasite your character is imbued with that grants different skills and stats, it also affects their strengths and weaknesses. As you level up Magatama will grant you more powerful abilities and will determine what types of attacks you are strong or weak against. As you progress through the game you will gain access to new Magatama, and it is important that you experiment with them, so you know how to use them to take advantage of different foes.

Once you have earned enough experience points to level up you will receive a notification informing you that the Magatama you have equipped has begun to act violently. You will be given the choice to allow it to continue or not. This is a gamble, since letting it run wild can result in your full party being healed but can also hit you with a nasty debuff in the form of a curse. Most of the early game Magatamas will only offer beneficial outcomes so make sure you take advantage of their perks. Once you have progressed further into the game the risk of getting cursed mid-dungeon increases and will cause you problems if it happens. You should therefore stock up on items to remove debuffs since it's often more efficient than packing lots of healing items. To remove the actual curse you will need to speak to the Lady of the Fount at the Fountain of Life and choose the 'Remove Curse' option. These areas will be marked on your map by a green circular icon, as will the door that leads to them.

Special Pixie Event

In Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster the first demon you recruit is Pixie. You will encounter her in the walkway leading to the Shinjuku Medical Center Annex. As you will only have a few demons in your rooster during the early game and the Press Turn Battle System favors numbers during combat it is recommended that you don't release her when you get to Yoyogi Park, you will be thankful of your decision as there is a special event in nearby Shibuya that she triggers that lets her, or her descendants through fusion evolve into a Level 80 'Super' Pixie when you reach the Fifth Kalpa area later in the game.

Level Up your Demons to Evolve them

Not all demons can be recruited or fused and in order to complete your Demon Compendium you will need to evolve them. First though you will need to access the Demon Compendium which is unlocked when you complete the first few story quests in Ginza and the Great Underpass of Ginza. Once Collector Manikin gives you the letter that allows passage to Ikebukuro where the Demon Compendium will be available at the Cathedral of Shadows.

Any demons you have recruited will automatically be registered into the Demon Compendium, if your demon has different skills from those existing on record you will be given the option to overwrite them. You can use the item Divining Water to tell if a demon is capable of evolving. If the demon is able to evolve into a new form, it must learn all of it's hidden skills from leveling up, and the protagonist's level must at least be 4 less than the resultant demon's. When a demon is close to hitting the right level to evolve, a message will appear on screen saying changes are visible on their body.

Take Advantage of Fusion

Make regular visits to the Cathedral of Shadows in order to fuse the demons you have recruited into new types, so you enable them to level up. When you fuse demons together the new version created will inherit skills from the demons you used allowing you to build teams that can take advantage of the elemental weaknesses of your enemies and help you recruit more demon allies.

Use fusion to get rid of low-level or useless demons to create a stronger one that could fit your rosters. Not all demons can be fused together, to find out if a fusion is possible you need to select a demon from the list, a menu will then appear showing you the other demons it can fuse with and also the name of the resulting demon.
