As traditional FROM Software titles go, death will be frequent and constant throughout your gameplay. However, as death can be a learning experience, it can have negative effects. When you die once, you'll have the option to Resurrect. Upon death and without the option to resurrect, the following things will occur:

You'll be transported to the last idol you communed with.

You'll lose half of your EXP and Sen (money)

Chance of inflicting Dragonrot to friendly NPCs increases (which lowers the chance of Unseen Aid)
