If you battle a high level npc with something with a high level stat, but kill the npc with the thing that you want mastery in, the exp will go to whatever landed the finishing blow.
2 main ways to grind mastery is:
1. Use Buddha and Cyborg v4 to grind the NPC's at chocolate land as they give a lot of mastery and money and they are really close together
2. Server hop the Longma boss as he gives the second most mastery out of any boss in the game besides cake queen. Longma is better to farm than cake queen because he takes a lot shorter time to kill compared to cake queen
