Gems are a secondary resource which you earn as you play. Whenever you decide to Abdicate the gems you have gained are cashed-in and will increase your production and Faction coin find chance in your new game. The rate of increase to the Faction Coin find chance steeply decreases the more gems you accrue. The amount of gems you have also determines your Faction, Challenge and Research upgrades.
