Introduction

I liked Rayman on the playstation. It had an awesome soundtrack, the graphics were bright and colourful, and it kept me busy for quite a long time, but when I saw this in the shop, I was exstatic, but when I put it in my GBA, I was shocked to find out they had just ported over the playstation version, but made it worse.

 

Graphics

The graphics are nice, like the PSone version, but they're just not as colourful. The contrast has also been put down a bit, plus the lack of screenlight on the GBA, making the graphics very dull. The pixels on Rayman also stick out, whereas they didn't on the PSone.

 

Sound

AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!! My god, what have they done to Rayman's beautiful, beautiful music?!?!?!?!? The music on the PSone was great, and then Ubi Soft made it alot less clearer, more ugly, and extremely annoying. When I confronted Mr. Dark for the final battle, it took me ages to realise that was supposed to be the Final Boss song on the PSone version, and they also stick random tunes in the wrong levels, so the music really doesn't fit, like the final battle song in bongo hills. Sometimes, it also misses out some sound effects, like when you're winding up you're fist to punch.

 

Gameplay

Okay, the gameplay's just as good as the PSone version, so I'll give this game credit for that. Unfortunately, the controls are sometimes quite unresponsive, but this isn't any major problem. However, getting Rayman to crawl is way harder that the PSone version. In the PSone version, you just had to hold down R2 or L2, but in Rayman Advance, you have to hold down both down and left or right, which on the GBA's D-Pad, is hard to do, but it's easier to do on the GBA SP's or the DS's D-Pad, so not a problem if you have an SP or DS.

 

Lastability

The game WILL take you ages to complete, but the aggrivating thing is that you can't go to the Candy Chateau level and confront Mr. Dark till you've busted every cage in the game, and because there's loads of levels and about six cages per level, all of which are quite well hidden, I don't know anyone who's ever got to battle Mr. Dark, apart from me and my brother.

 

Overall

I would've given Rayman 1 a 10, being absolutely quality, but because this is only half as good, this only gets a 5. Better luck next time, Ubi Soft. Let's just hope you don't port over Rayman's superior sequel, Rayman 2: The Great Escape, this time for the DS. I dread to think how dreadful it'll be and... uh... too late.

This game is good when you're bored, because some of it's bosses and levels are tough to master, like Mr. Skops, which actually needs the invincibility cheat to complete. Apart from that, you ought to be playing this game for the PSone.
