what does suppression fire mean?

I'm just really curious, so I looked in the booklet. It said, "Provide suppressive fire at tagated area." I know it's suppressive fire! I just don't know WHAT suppressive fire IS! And I'm like, "how is this sopposed to help, boooklet?" I mean they could at least provide an explination, right? Anyways, I am extremely curious and I NEED to know what this means. (also, it might come in handy for giving commands if I know what the command does)

Suppression fire is normally used to fire at an opponent to distract them (most shots will miss). You can use this in SOCOM for example if a teammate is shot down use this so you can distract the enemy to revive him while the enemy is cowering in cover.

In easier words, suppression fire is heavy fire on a certain area. i.e One fireteam in sneaking around while you provide suppression fire as a distraction. This is called aggro btw.
