My suggestion is that before the battle, equip those accessories that break after battle. Why? Because they last all three battles. Get Instant EX mode (save that for later). Give yourself like, 16 Atk and Def, and if you are about to lose, hit retry so the accessories don't break (if you die, they will break). You can even quicksave right in front of him, so if you DO die, just shut off and load up again. Also, Cloud/Tidus are the best to kill him with. Smiting soul works, it's just 2% chance as always.

i personally used Cecil, and as for the retrying, don't. don't equip the breakable equip, and when you lose, back out to keep the experience, and try again, then leave every time you lose, and eventually, you'll be like 20-30 levels higher than him, and should be easier to defeat him...

I personally used Squall(lvl. 50)...so you need an hp attack and dodge and you can defeat CHAOS(lvl. 48)...
