Try to Complete Missions Quickly

When you complete missions in The Colonists the game will give you ratings based on the time it took for you to get it done. Basically the faster you complete the mission the more stars you get. Once you start building a lot during the planning and structure placement phase don't be afraid to reduce the speed of the game or even pause it to save time, so you can complete the mission faster. Although you do not receive any rewards for completing a mission quickly it will mean you will not need to repeat the mission which is time-consuming.

Pay Attention to Resource Requirements

Always pay attention to resources requirements to avoid suddenly finding out you are lacking a specific resource which then creates a snowball effect that results in lost time trying to fix problems. Don't just look at the amount of items produced and required, but also at the potential total production and requirements. You will be fine if those numbers are equal or production is higher. If this is not the case you need to begin building a structure that produces the resource you need.

Always Construct Buildings

To help your progression in The Colonists it is important that you are always building something. Only construct one building at a time to ensure it gets made as quickly as possible, and no resources are left idle. If you request six planks and six stone you will cover the material cost for most intermediate buildings. You can speed up the building process by placing a storage yard near the new build area.

Build your Road Network First

Your first priority whenever you start a new mission is to determine where you are going to build your roads. Pause the game and take a moment to study the landscape, so you can figure out where to place them. To allow your colony to grow and thrive you need to build your road network around the main points of interest, these will be the areas where resources and mines are located, and you need to have multiple potential routes to enable you to gain easy access to multiple types of resources.

Have Two Workshops

If you have two workshops you can substantially reduce the amount of time you spend waiting for research to be completed, which will enable you to complete missions faster. Make sure that your first research upgrade is 'Faster Research Speed' as this will save you a lot of time. After that it doesn't really matter, but you may want to consider 'Faster Seedling Growth' and 'Faster Mining' as both these upgrades will help you considerably with resources management.

Keep Game Saves

Anything can happen at any time in The Colonists, so you need to be prepared for the unexpected at all times. If you keep multiple save files for the same game you will not need to start again if something unforeseen like a road gridlock suddenly happens. It is recommended that you keep at least three save game files, so you can always load one and fix whatever got broken before it occurs and screws up your game.

Feed your Lumberjack and Miner Robots

Although they are robots, your colonists still require food and water in order to turn it into energy to keep them moving. Energy is needed to power your lumber and mining buildings which produce logs and stone, therefore powering up your lumberjack and miner robots is something you should prioritize when you begin.

You will be able to get plenty of water by placing a well which only takes up a small space, and you will be able to get food by placing Sheep Farms. The only requirment of a sheep tile is to have one of the sides of the square touch another side of a sheep tile. As this is the only requirement you can construct Sheep Farms to fill up the little areas between your roads. One Well and one Sheep Farm will provide enough food and water to sustain four Residences, this will get you through the early game.

Maximize your Grass Tiles

Crops and animals can only be placed on grass tiles In The Colonists, this means you will be unable to place them in deserts, tundras, or beaches. When you build your farms you need to do so accordingly but one way to get around this, so you save space is to build the actual farm building on sand or snow, that way you will maximize the amount of grass space you have at your disposal for crops and animals.

Deforest, and then Reforest

You are given some logs at the start of The Colonists, but you will need considerably more to meet the requirements of the buildings you need to construct which means you will need lots of trees. Begin by using the logs you have to build a Lumberjack Hut, so you can start to gather logs from the nearby trees. Use these to then build a Forestry, so you can plant new trees and regrow the forest in order to produce a continuous supply of wood.

Find a Permanent Source of Stone

One of the first things you need to do early in The Colonists is find a permanent source of stone. Although stone is not as important as logs, it is still an essential resource that will soon deplete around your starting point. This basically means you need to find a mine shaft, and it is here where you should expand from as you will now be able to upgrade the roads to stone roads which will help you to progress in the game a lot faster.
