Always Request Docking Permission

Always request docking permission at a space station as failing to do so is punishable by death. Request docking permission whenever you are 7km from a space station, if you forget to do so you will be told loitering is a crime punishable by death and be given 90 seconds to exit the station before you are instantly destroyed. If the station acknowledges the docking request it will provide you with a landing pad number for you to land at along with a 10 minute landing timer.

Check your Fuel

It is essential that you continually check your fuel because without it you will be unable to perfrom hypersapce jumps and eventually your life support will run out which is fatal. You can find out if you have enough fuel for what you plan on doing by looking at the Galaxy Map when you plot a route. A solid line on the map indicates a journey you will be able to complete with your current fuel load while a dashed line indicates you will not have enough fuel to complete the journey. In desolate areas of Elite Dangerous there will be no space stations that you can dock at to refuel so it is worth getting a fuel scope module for long journeys so you can siphon fuel from the stars themselves.

Choose your Weapons Carefully

Selecting the right weapons for your loadout is important and should be carefully planned as there are a lot of variables between weapons. The thing you must consider most is making sure you have a good mix of thermal and kinetic weapons. Thermal Weapons have a better damage rate for shields while kinetic weapons deal better hull damage. Consider adding gimballed or turreted weapons to your loadout as they will greatly increase your accuracy in battle by automatically tracking your target. The downside to these weapons though is they both come with damage penalties.

Always have a Rebuy

The most important part of Elite Dangerous is making sure your credit balance is enough to cover your current insurance premium. If you decide to fly without insurance and your ship is destroyed it is lost forever. Your insurance which is referred to as 'your rebuy' is based on the cost of your ship plus the modifications you made to it.

Your rebuy cost is listed next to your credit balance. If you have this insurance your ship and all modules will be returned to you at the nearest starport to your termination. In the event that your bank balance is not enough to cover the insurance you can either take out a loan which is paid off by being automatically deducted out of future profit or you can lower the rebuy cost itself by deselcting modules which will have to be repurchased and re-engineered if you modified them.

Join a Squadron

A good way to get started in Elite Dangerous is to join a squadron as this will enable you to unite with your fellow pilots and organize short and long term goals you can strive towards. Choose a Squadron which focuses on the type of gameplay that interests you, such as bounty hunting, Community Goals, or furthering the agenda of a faction. You can join a squadron directly from the game by going here.

Start with the Tutorials

It is recommended that the first thing you do in Elite Dangerous is spend time going through the tutorials. Especially the initial training simulations as they will not only help to prepare you but also allow you to become familiar with the game without facing any consequences if you get things wrong.
