Introduction

Pro Evolution Soccer 5 is most definitely a better game than Fifa 06. Its realistic gameplay and graphics engines are second to none and there are very few aspects of the game that have obvious flaws. The one major problem with it is the lack of licenses, with only Serie A (the premier Italian league) fully licensed, but after a while you will stop noticing this and concentrate more on the rock solid gameplay.

Graphics

The graphics are utterly amazing, and the best I have seen on any sports game on the PS2 to date. Some of the less well known players from lower leagues are slightly typical, with most of them looking similar, but let's face it, most of you are going to spend your time playing as Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United or Liverpool anyway. The player faces for the big leagues are flawless, and you can even see the breath from the players mouths going misty in cold weather.

Sound

The music is alright to start with, but if you spend any length of time on the menus it starts to get boring and slightly annoying. The sound effects are solid e.g the ball being kicked, the whistle blowing, and the crowd noise provides a realistic representation of the excitement of a real match. The commentary, as usual in football games, is good at first, but quickly gets repetitive, although you will probably be too wrapped up in the match to notice.

Gameplay

The only word to describe it is flawless. How on earth are they going to improve on this? The way the ball travels is absolutely realistic down to the last detail. Of course, what you really want to know is, is it better than Fifa? It's definitely more realistic, but whether that makes it better all depends on what you want from a football game. The one minor flaw is how easy it is to give away free kicks, but you will eventually learn new ways of cleanly winning the ball. To get to grips with the controls quickly, I would recommend you go through the beginners and intermediate training modes.

Lastability

This game has tons of great modes and features to keep you interested. Obviously, you have the amazing Master League, which you can play as many seasons as you want in, and the League mode which has all the major leagues, but there is also the Challenge mode to keep you interested. There is also the PES shop which contains tons of new stuff to unlock, such as stadiums, new features for Master League, new players, classic teams and more. You earn points by completing challenges and playing games in the league modes.

Overall

The best football game in history, and definitely much superior to Fifa 06. However, Fifa will doubtless shift far more copies because of Pro Evo's lack of licenses. The real masters of the football sim, however, will know that Pro Evo 5 provides a sterner and more realistic test, and as such is the best football game money can buy. I would definitely recommend this game to any fan of football.
