Wow! It seems the Pokemon Company have just taken things to a whole new level regards gaming - not only is it a Pokemon DS game, but you, the hero of the game, get turned into a Pokemon! Once you are thrust into the world of Pokemon, you form a rescue team - and from here on, you have the chance to interact, battle and recruit other Pokemon.
Some people have said that this game isn't worthwhile; perhaps this review will make your mind up once and for all.
Being a DS game, it is notoriously difficult to produce good graphics; in PMD, the Pokemon all have intricate details and are no longer those pixel Pokemon you would normally see in your party in the other games. Small things such as the tip of Charmander's tail to Squirtle's turtleshell will impress you; however the environment of the dungeons and everywhere around you is a little too simple, and again the little things such as the items on the ground feel a bit too 2D for anyone's liking.
The music in the game is actually very bubbly, cheery, and certainly not out of tune nor irritating; however the fact that most of the sound repeats over and over and over again in the dungeons (especially those 99 floor ones) will probably have you fritting your teeth. You also can't help but feel the Pokemon Company could have been a little bit more detailed; you've heard these tunes before when you were trainers in the game.
However, the music is actually very good for a DS game and if it gets annoying, well, that is what the sound level adjuster is for.
The gameplay is relatively unique; your Pokemon and partner are battling on what feels to be a chess board, as your opponent does not move until you do. There are lots of options to check whilst in a dungeon, such as the main menu which states how filled your belly is (a vital part in the game), and even the amount of money you are carrying. There is even a message log for when you are travelling in the dungeon for convenience.
However, the amount of tabs can get slightly confusing; it may take awhile for you to adjust to it. There are also some occasions where you don't feel there is not enough on-screen interaction for it to be a DS game. The new password for online rescuing is a fabulous idea, however, and it really makes this game stand out, and I really loved the concept of 'Friend Areas', and the personality quiz was great fun.
The whole storyline is creative and well-thought out, and the optional missions are relatively entertaining. However, it gets slightly repetitive rescuing, rescuing, and rescuing, and I think this game could offer a bit more. However, the fact you can catch ALL 386 Pokemon will probably have completionists squealing with delight. There are a lot of things for you to complete in the game; gaining Lucario Rank, recruiting all Pokemon, and getting all those legendaries you couldn't normally get are just a few ideas.
I liked the rescuing idea, overall, however I think it could have offered more.
Overall, I really loved this game; the creativity was very good, and the graphics were great for a DS game. I believe it will cater for all fans, and there are even references to the fourth generation of Pokemon - see if you can find them!
I think, however, the game could have been less repetitive and should have varied in music a bit more. The lastability was the worse aspect in PMD, which is quite an important feature of a game.
However, I recommend anyone to purchase this game - it's entertaining, creative, and another great game by the Pokemon Company.
