Within Pokemon Crystal, like all other Pokemon games, you will be challenged by your Rival throughout your journey.

Cherrygrove City:

The first time you battle your Rival will be in Cherrygrove City after meeting with Mr. Pokemon.

Azalea Town:

The next time you face your Rival will be in Azalea Town. He has caught two new Pokemon and evolved his Stater Pokemon.

Burnt Tower:

The next time you face your Rival will be in Burnt Tower. He has caught a new Pokemon and has evolved another.
