When I am in diagon alley and other places how do I change to a dark character?

Question for LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7
When I am in diagon alley and other places how do I change to a dark character? In the last game I held down triangle or something to change characters but it is not letting me do that or switch to another character besides harry, ron or harmione or however you spell her name. I feel quite dumb that I cannot figure this out but it seems I have tried everything. Apparently not enough I guess.

Find a couldron and use B to select the lower icon, you get to choose from the unlocked characters. This works anywhere outside of free play/story modes (ie diagon alley, the leaky couldron, London, and hogsmeade and Hogwarts etc etc
