Question for Psychonauts

This is really lame but I can't figure out how to use Ford's machine to combine Psicards and Psicores!

I have enough of both to make more than one Psi challenge marker but I've stood in front of the machine and pressed just about every button on my keyboard and nothing happens? Am I even allowed to be making them just yet? I haven't gone to meet Sasha yet, I've only done basic braining.

This is on PC by the way. Sorry for the lame question, I've googled everything and I still for the life of me can't figure it out.
