Sub Players

PES 2019 has introduced the ability to make quick substitutions on the fly, and it is essential that you take advantage of this feature as the game's new stamina system will make players abilities decrease drastically when they become tired. You can easily swap two players whenever the ball goes out of play with a few button presses on your controller, and it is important that you do this when players are tired and their skills are diminishing as leaving them in the game will often lead to injury.

Be Patient in Defense

The key to mastering defending in PES 2019 is being patient and resisting the temptation to charge the player with the ball. If you do this you will open up gaps in your defense which the opposing team will be able to take advantage of and get a clear path to goal. By keeping your formation and marking the opposition attackers you will make it difficult for them to penetrate your defense.

Don't Sprint Everywhere

Resist the temptation of keeping your finger on the sprint button when you mount an attack as it will quickly tire out your players and will often result in an easy interception. You will have more success if you focus on short passes and clever dribbling to create space and open up avenues in the midfield. The only time you should resort to sprinting is when your player has broken free down the wings and is in the clear. If you do sprint you need to keep an eye on the stamina gauge as it will deplete quickly.

How to Take Free Kicks

Taking a free kick, so the ball rises above the opposing teams wall and swerves away from the goalkeeper to nestle up in the top corner is tricky but with practice you will get a feel for the amount of power you need. When you take this type of free kick you need to fill roughly two-thirds of the power bar. If you can get the amount of power correct even the average players can become set-piece specialists.

How to Defend the Low Cross

The AI in this installment of the game particularly likes the low cross and you will need to effectively defend against it to stop the threat. An effective way to do this is to show the winger the 'inside' so there is less of a chance of them getting to the byline and whipping in a low dangerous cross. If you that doesn't work, and you are still struggling to contain the winger you can hold R1 and X to get some additional help from a nearby defender so you crowd the player and make it difficult for him to find space to cross the ball.
