Okay, here are my answers to your questions.
1) First, you have to get four jewels of the same color. Then, go up to your farm. Go to an area that has four altars around land that you can't farm on. The four altars are connected by the pathways, so make sure you put the jewels on the four connecting altars. Doing this will not only provide you with more farm land, but it might also open new doors for you.
2) When you first break a seal to open the door in the 2nd cave, and go in there, you will notice that you can't go that far. There are sandstorms in your way. After obtaining the Buggy from Dr. Hope, the sandstorms will subside, and you will be able to go farther in. Travel through this desert area, to the east. There will be many Peach Trees in this area. Go North of the area with the Peach Trees, and this is where the Hermit's Hut is. There are various Banana and Papaya fruits here. Now, to advance the storyline with the Hermit, you have to explore the tunnels to the left of the Hot Springs. When you do, talk to the Hermit. He should mention the Forest Path, and something about a gift. Now, you cannot actually give him a gift until after the 21st of Summer. If you have the Crest now, you can go up and give it to him, only if it's after the 21st. If you still don't have the Crest, go get it. If you can't get it yet, break more seals. Masami should have given you a Red Jewel, so you got a small headstart at breaking another seal.
3) After you give the Water Crest to the Hermit, he will give you a Forest Crest. Go down to Mermaid Lake, northwest of the Hermit's Hut. Go up to the edge of the lake, and the mermaid will swim up to you. She will say a few things, and then 'open' the Giant Forest. Not the entire forest, only the Mist Forest section. You cannot use your Buggy in this area, because it doesn't fit. When you get in the Forest Area, you will see a blue chest almost immediately. It'll be to your right. This chest contains the Monsoon Watering Can.
4) Open up your rucksack. Highlight the tool that you want to know the level of. You will see it's description and it's level. For example, "Doctor's WC" is Level 1. The description is something like "Doctor Hope's Small Watering Can."
