How do I get the flash light to work in dark rooms

First of all, you need to make sure that your cursor passes over evidence of some kind, be it blood stains, a shirt, murder weapon, or whatever, once you are able to do that, you need but to push the X button, and your choices to either open your kit, or back out will show, at that point in time, you can choose to open your kit, and you will be able to access the flashlight, but you must make absolutely sure that you are on top of a piece of evidence, I had trouble with this the first time I played the game, so, I set the brightness level on my television, so that I can at least somewhat see what I'm doing.
