How can you play as other characters besides crash and cortex in the multiplayer mode?

You need to have performed the task to unlock each character's first car in Story Mode before they become available in Multiplayer Mode.
You need to go to multiplayer and make some money in the races and all that in multiplayer. Then go to the gift shop in multiplayer and buy the other characters cars.
