To become a good pilot you must know how to land the aircraft smoothly and correctly. This includes both the touchdown and descent onto the runway. Listed below are the various things you need to take into account to land.
These are visual aids that can provide you with information to acquire and maintain the correct approach to an airport's runway. They can be found on the side of the runway in the form of four lights that will flash red or white depending on your altitude. For a perfect approach onto the runway, you need to make sure that the PAPI lights show two red lights and two white lights.
Your approach speed to the runway must be correct, as it will determine how good the landing is. Landing too fast may lead to a hard landing and the chance of overrunning the runway. Landing too slowly may stall the aircraft. To attain the perfect speed, you need to slow down enough so that the 'Landing Speed' UI appears. If you then stay within the indicated landing speed range, you will land smoothly.
This is sometimes referred to as 'flaring', it is an action following the final approach phase and precedes the touchdown and roll-out phases of landing. In the flare, the nose of the plane is raised, slowing the descent rate and therefore leading to a softer touchdown. If you raise the nose too high it will lead to the aircraft increasing in altitude instead of decreasing, or cause the aircraft to land too late, which will risk overrunning the runway.
Make sure your plane is parallel with the heading of the runway on descent. You do this by finding out the number of the runway you intend on landing at (For example runway 36R), the runway number indicates what its heading on a compass (36R heading is 360.) Then, start heading in that heading. You can only start this procedure once you have a visual of the runway and are somewhat aligned with it.
It is crucial that you land in the correct position. If you land too early on the runway it indicates that your approach was too low. Landing too late likely indicates you flared too much or your approach was too high. Try to get your plane near the 'aiming' point (see screenshot below) when landing to ensure that your back gears touch down first before the front ones. If you are landing front first, it indicates you flared wrong.
