OK, one major cause of the avatar cloud is because of something you are wearing taking too long to load. Remove everythin and put back on one by one to find the cause. Hope that helps!

Also worth trying....try clearing your SL Application Data. It's a hidden file in My Documents which stores a heap of unecessary info. The only downside is there won't be an image of your last login screen until you log out from SL again

Press Ctrl-Alt-D to enable advanced menu. Then go to Advanced > Character > Character Tests > Test Male/Female.

You should then be able to wear your old skin, shape, etc. and be not a cloud.

Wear a character from the library! Then change back to you character!

It should clear the cloud!
