Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood Chao FAQ Created by Sonictrainer Introduction Hi, my name is Ryan aka Sonictrainer and this is the first FAQ that I have posted online. This guide was made to help people with any Chao problems on Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Since Chao are used differently in this game than in past Sonic titles, this guide will help answer peoples questions about Chao, Chao Egg locations, and anything else Chao related in the game. There are also little tips about enemy weaknesses, missions, and optional characters. Updates 12/10/08 I accidently misinterpreted the info I received. I saw a forum on GameSpot/GameFAQs that was called Stugs Chao. Toronto, Canada. Sunday 14th. Immediately, I read the first post and thought that Event Chao were released at some Anime Con. However, I found out that the author, Berstich, had went to the Nintendo World Event and was going to the Con and bringing their DS to trade 98 copies of Stugs to people who were also going. In a way, this is info for people if you want Stugs but I havent been able to get in contact with Berstich. My bad >_<. 12/4/08 I received some percentages when using a Lv.3 Fess and added it to Section 4. Once I calculate the percentages using Lv.1, Lv.2, and multiple copies of Fess, I will add Fess as a method to Section 5. Also, I received info about glitches in the game and added new questions to Section 7. 11/10/08 I added a new method of trading in Section 4. I also added info Ive received about certain Chao after they level up and other info I accidently missed in the Prima Guide (which I dont own) in the Chao Index. I also added more questions to Section 7 to help people who are wondering about the Special Event/Viral Chao and one regarding a glitch I recently found in the Chao garden. Finally, I added someone to the Special Thanks section and reedited the Contact Info Section so I get more info from readers. 10/27/08 I fixed some errors on eggs in the Nrrgal Colony and Voxai Colony Beta and added more notes to the Egg Locations. I also got some new info about trading in the Class and Level Section. I also added Leveling Up data I received about Ferox and Hayda in the Chao Index. Finally, I added someone to the Special Thanks section and revised the Contact Info section for people who have a Gamefaqs/Gamespot account. 10/23/08 I fixed an error on Ferox in the Chao Index and added someone to the Special Thanks section. 10/22/08 FAQ was posted Online for the first time on Gamefaqs.com. What are Chao? History of Chao: Chao are special creatures that live in Sonics world. They first appeared in Sonic Adventure (For the Dreamcast) and could be raised and cared for in areas called Chao Gardens. Once they hatched from their eggs, players could interact with them and raise them. Besides the fact that Chao are born with certain facial expressions and colors, they also have the ability to copy characteristics of their surroundings and other living creatures, making them stronger in certain stats (speed, flying, swimming, strength, stamina, intelligence, and luck). For example, if a player were to give a Chao a rabbit, the Chao would take on the rabbits appearance (it would either grow rabbit ears, paws, feet, and tail) and its speed stat would greatly increase. Some Chao can even grow up to be angelic Hero types (good, polite) or demonic Dark types, depending the breeders personality. You may notice some Chao that resemble Sonic, the rest of his friends, and Nights (From Nights into Dreams and Journey of Dreams). To get certain emblems in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, players had to have their Chao win races and karate tournaments against CP Chao. This also allowed them to win medals and toys that could be played with in the gardens. Unfortunately, in those games, Chao have very short life spans and would pass away after a certain amount of time. However, if players treated their Chao very well, they will just become reborn and turn back into an egg. Since these games Chao havent had actual role in any Sonic game. Besides Omochao, a mechanical Chao who gives advice, Chao only made appearances in the background. That isuntil now. How Chao are used in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood: This games use of Chao is completely different from what has been done in the past. In this game, Chao are collectibles that power up Sonic and his friends in battle or on the field. Heres how it works: 1. Find Chao egg in area. 2. Walk over to the egg and touch it to collect it. 3. You have to wait for the eggs to hatch so you can either continue to play the game or put your character in a safe area and dont move. 4. When the eggs are ready to hatch, youll hear a noise and notice that the egg icon on the top screen will shake. 5. Push start/Open the menu and tap on the Chao icon to see what Chao you have and which Chao have just hatched. 6. Push the Shoe icon in order to bond Chao to characters on your current team. 7. You can also trade with others (See part 4 for more about trading). That is basically all there is to collecting Chao in this game. 2. Egg Locations There are 100 Chao eggs total in the game that have a chance of hatching into one of 39 different Chao. If you skip a good portion of the eggs though, youll lose your chance to collect them all. In this section, I list every eggs location, how you can get them, and warn you about story elements that could affect your search for them. If you have all 39 Chao except Cheese, please read section 3. (Key) Egg No: I made it so that all the eggs can be found in the easiest order. For example, after you find egg No.5, egg No.6 should be the closest egg from egg No.5. Who you choose to be on your teams wont affect your egg collecting but will affect your battles with enemies and bosses. *WARNING* Once you arrive here, you cannot return to the previous areas. Keep that in mind before you decide to go to Nocturne. Also, once you leave you cant come back to this area so make sure you carefully collect everything before you head to the stars on the map. If you are missing some rings, items, and/or Chao eggs from any of the other colonies (Kron, Nrrgal, Zoah, Voxai Beta and Alpha) you will have to return again in the new game plus and collect them then (Read Section 5 to learn more). *IMPORTANT NOTE*Just recently I found out theres a glitch in the game involving one of the eggs in this area. I have info from my own observations but I will update if I find out more information about it. Egg No.1 Team Availability: Sonics team only Location on Map: Southeast corner on ledge Directions: In the second room, go left, up the stairs, and exit to the left. Once inside, go all the way to the right and youll see it on the ledge. Field Moves needed: Fly Lv.2 Note: You can get this egg after Knuckles team gets attacked by the turret and needs Sonics team to hit the switch. Egg No.4 Team Availability: Knuckles team only Location on Map: Southeast corner of area Directions: Fly across, walk to the right of the entrance, fly across again, and get the egg. Field Moves needed: Fly Note: You can get this egg after Sonics team pulls the switch. Egg No.5 Team Availability: Knuckles team only Location on Map: East side Directions: After fighting, fly to the left, walk over to the left, and climb up the wall. Its next to a Gizoid. So complete everything else beforehand. Knuckles team: Climb up towards the star and fight Scylla. Sonics team: Use the Dash ramp on the west side. Egg No.6 Team Availability: Sonics team only Location on Map: Top left corner Directions: Use the Dash ramp at the west side of the area. Field Moves needed: Dash Note: You can get this egg after Knuckles team finds Scylla. Egg No.7 Team Availability: Knuckles team only Location on Map: Inside the water switch room. Walk over to the right and hop off the side. Head right past the black emerald symbol on the floor and youll find it. Field Moves needed: Climb Note: You can get this egg after fighting Charyb. *IMPORTANT NOTE* There is a glitch that has Knuckles team transported to Ix as soon as he comes outside of the water switch room. I myself have had it happen and missed 10 rings and this egg in Nocturne when I first beat the game. To avoid it, follow these instructions: 1. Collect everything before going to the star where Knuckles meets Scylla and save before that point 2. When it switches to Sonics team, find Charyb. (When fighting just defend and heal) 3. Defeat Scylla and go directly into the room. 4. Quickly grab everything in the room and then pull the switch 5. Defeat Charyb 6. When it switches back to Knuckles team immediately go outside, climb up the wall, and hop over to the right. Egg No.9 Team Availability: Sonics team only Location on Map: In the hall that Charyb flooded. Directions: You can actually get this egg before fighting Charyb. However, its more difficult since when the hallways are flooded, your teams HP and PP decrease and you cant use POW moves when fighting enemies. So there are 2 ways to get it: 1. Before fighting Charyb- Head straight, without turning to the right, and youll find it at the end. 2. After fighting Charyb- Go into the center room with the elevator, head southwest, and go left. Field Moves needed: None Note: You can get this egg after Knuckles team finds Scylla. Egg No.10 Team Availability: Sonics team only Location on Map: In the hall that Charyb flooded. Directions: You can actually get this egg before fighting Charyb. However, its more difficult since when the hallways are flooded, your teams HP and PP decrease and you cant use POW moves when fighting enemies. So there are 2 ways to get it: 1. Before fighting Charyb- When you reach the center room, go northeast, and then make a right. 2. After fighting Charyb- Go into the center room with the elevator, head northeast, and make a right. Field Moves needed: None Note: You can get this egg after Knuckles team finds Scylla. Egg No.11 Team Availability: Sonics team only Location on Map: Near the top of the map Directions: Go into the center room and use the elevator. Once youre on the top go right and hit the spring (it doesnt matter which one) Field Moves needed: None Note: You can get this egg after Knuckles team finds Ix. Also, once you enter the door, youll be in the final battle. If you dont have all 40 Chao by now, see Section 5 to learn how you can. 3. Cream & Cheese In this game there are 2 optional characters that can be found and added to your team: Cream the Rabbit and E-123 Omega (See Metropolis Egg No.10 in Section 2 to learn how to get Omega). You can beat the main story without them, but they make the game easier, add more dialogue, and add more group POW moves to use in battle. If you want Cream to join your team, however, you have to find her Chao, Cheese, first. Unlike any of the other 39 Chao in the game Cheese doesnt hatch from an egg and will always be in the same place. Heres what you have to do in order to find Cheese and add Cream to your party: 1. When you return to the Green Hill Zone in chapter 2, fix the bridge on the right side of the old hideout in the center of the area (On the map, its on the right side of the star). 2. Cross the bridge and immediately make a left to make a Fly icon come up. 3. Fly to the left and continue left, until you see a little incline and spring. As you go past it, youll find Cream. 4. Talk to her and tell her youll go look for Cheese. 5. Return to the Green Hill Zone after finding Knuckles/in Chapter 3 and head to the stone tower near the shore on the right side of the area. Climb up the tower and go inside to find Cheese. 6. Return to Cream and ask her if she wants to join. *IMPORTANT NOTE* If you tell Cream that she cant join your team or go to Metropolis without having her join, you wont be able to use her in the game at all until you play a new game/plus (Read Section 5 to learn more). The same thing goes for if you dont find Cheese. Also, if youre playing a new game/plus after beating it the first time, you will still have Cheese if you got him the first time. You can have multiple copies of Cheese. 4. Class & Level In this game all Chao are now categorized by Class and Level. Class/Type: This basically represents how powerful a Chao is and how often youll find it. There are 3 classes/types of Chao: Common, Rare, and Unique. While they are each different from each other, no Chao can ever change its class/type. Common Chao: Common Chao are the easiest Chao to find in the game. However, in terms of strength, some of them are the weakest. Most of these Chao give characters elemental shields and attacks, an increase in a stat, or recovery in battle. In the Chao Garden, all Common Chao are placed on the ground, underneath the Rare and Unique Chao. List of Common Chao: - Barbo - Cheezlet - Choo - Churdle - Ghise - Griff - Jirna - Knickt - Koolet - Korus - Oolean - Pyraz - Rugle - Saggo - Seeri - Stebsly - Stiglin - Velk - Zimba Rare Chao: Rare Chao are the in between group of the classes/types. They are harder to find than Common Chao but easier to find than Unique Chao. They are all stronger than Common Chao while some are almost equal to the Unique Chao. Most of them have abilities that affect players outside of battle while some of them are stronger versions of some of the Common Chao. The most notable Rare Chao is Fess, who increases the chances of finding more Rare or Unique Chao. In the Chao Garden, all Rare Chao are on the first 1st hillside, above the Common Chao but under the Unique Chao. List of Rare Chao: - Belgog - Bepke - Blazye - Bobo - Dusty - Gibber - Fess - Hayda - Joy - Kayla - Keroyo - Luunan - Oldarg - Radu - Rugle Unique Chao: These Chao have the best abilities in the game. However, they are the hardest to find (except Cheese). In the Chao Garden, all Unique Chao sit at the top of the hillside, above the Common and Rare Chao. List of Unique Chao: - Cheese - Choopaloo - Ferox - Ovus - Spartoi Special Event Chao (aka Viral Chao): Similar to the Pokmon games, there are extra Chao out of the 40 that you will never be able to find in the game. In order to get these Chao, you have to go to a special event to where it can be downloaded to your game or trade with someone who has it. They are also known as Viral Chao because when you trade them, youre really just downloading it to some elses game: they never leave your game through trading. Right now, Stugs is the only Special Event Chao we know of. In the Prima Strategy guide, however, 4 other Chao are mentioned. I also believe that in the Garden these Chao sit on the rocky grass spots to separate them from the regular 40 Chao, who sit on regular grass spots. This also means that out of all these Chao Stugs is the only Unique Chao and there are 2 Rare Chao and 8 Common Chao. That means there are 11 Special Event Chao. Of course this may also be false. Once I get more information Ill update the guide on these Chao. List of Special Event/Viral Chao: - Baki - Farfinkle - Fimbley - Pooki - Stugs Level: When a Chao level increases, its abilitys effects increase. In this game there are only 3 levels: Lv.1, Lv.2, and Lv.3/Max. In order to increase a Chao level you have to trade with people. If you want a level 3 Chao you would have to trade your Chao with 2 other people and then trade the same Chao back to get it. Trading: In order to trade with other people, both players need their DS and a copy of Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Here is list of things Ive learned about trading Chao in this game: -this is the only way for people to level up their Chao. -when you trade Chao, you are literally giving up one of your Chao for someone elses, so make sure you have copies of the Chao youre trading. -if you havent found certain Chao yet, you can trade with someone who does. Not only will they be added to your collection, but they will also be stronger. -when you gain a Chao in a trade, all copies of the same Chao will be at the highest level of the same Chao. For example, if you have 5 copies of the Chao Bobo at Lv.1 and get a Lv.1 Bobo in a trade, all 6 of them will be at Lv.2, instead of just having 5 Lv.1 Bobos and 1 Lv.2 Bobo. Or say you have a Lv.3 Fess, and you get a Lv.1 Fess in a trade. Then you will have 2 copies of Lv.3 Fess. -I have heard questions and statements about certain Chao abilities being unaffected by leveling up. When I hear more about this I will update the guide. -you need to trade in order to get Special Event/Viral Chao if you missed the event. Normally when youre picking Chao to trade with someone and you tap a Chao that you just traded, a message will come up saying that you have to trade with a different person in order to level up that Chao. However, there is a still a way to trade it with that same person. When you trade the first time, save, turn the games off, take the games out, and switch DSs. Put the games in the other persons DS, go to the same save file, and then youll be able to trade Chao that once had that message. Note: This will only work depending on the person with the least amount of Chao. For example, if one person has all 40 Chao and the other only has 20, then only 20 Chao will be traded back and forth between both people. *IMPORTANT NOTE* THIS GAME DOESNT HAVE WIFI COMPABILITIES. 5. Completing the Collection Some people will find all 40 Chao (including Cheese) before collecting all 100 eggs. However, since every egg hatched is random, you could find every egg in the game and still be missing a few. Here are a few methods and suggestions for finding all 40 Chao. Dont forget about Cheese!: If you dont have Creams Chao Cheese before going into Metropolis, there is already no way you can have all 40 Chao before collecting all 100 eggs. If you have all the other 39 Chao, you can either trade to get Cheese or just beat the game, play a new game Plus, and read Section 3 about how to get Cheese. New game Plus: When you beat the game, you will start from the beginning with all your stats, rings, items, and Chao. All eggs, missions, and item PCs will reset themselves whether or not you already collected/completed them, so you can continue to try and collect all 40 Chao. Sonic will be the only character that keeps everything equipped while the other characters points, items, and Chao will have to be reset. Rings will not reset. The Game Reset Method: When you find out that one or more of your eggs hatched, save before clicking on the icon, and see what hatched from the egg. If you have copies of all the Chao hatched, turn off the game, turn on the game, go to the same save file, and see if you got something different. When you use Fess, you also increase your chances of getting specific Chao. Trading: You can only use this method if you know someone who has a copy of this game (Read section 4 to learn more about Trading). 6. Chao Index Heres a list of all the Chao that are this game: the regular 40 and the special event Chao. Frequently Asked Questions This section will answer any questions about Chao I have heard being asked repeatedly. Q: Is Chao plural? A: Yes, it DOES NOT need an S when talking about more than one Chao. (Common Mistake) Q: Are Chao in this game? A: (Brief Silence).Yes. Q: Can you raise/pet/name/race/fight/ Chao in this game? A: No. Q: Is there a Chao Garden in this game? A: Yes, but its just a selection screen where you choose Chao to be bonded to your characters. Q: How do you level up Chao? A: You have to trade with other people (See Section 4). Q: Does this game have WIFI connection? A: No. You have to do local wireless in order to trade Chao. Q: Can you breed Chao in this game? A: Yes, you can trade them to get better Chao. No, because theres no mating in this game. Q: Can you bond more than one Chao to a character? A: No. A character can only have one bonded Chao at a time. Q: When you give a character an item that has elemental powers and give them a Chao that has the same elemental powers, does that element become more powerful for the character? A: No, the attack power stays in the same range. Q: Im still missing an egg in the last level. Where is it? A: Look at the Nocturne Egg No.8 in Section 2. Q: In the Chao Garden, one of my Chao is flashing from normal, white, and black. Why is this happening? A: This happened to me after I traded Chao using the DS switch method. At first, I thought it meant that Cheezlet had just leveled up (which it did) but once I moved the screen so he was out of sight and switched it back, he returned to normal. So far it is believed to be a graphical glitch that normally goes away. If this has happened to anyone else, please email me so I can figure out what causes it (See Contact Info Section). Q: What the? One of my Chao is at Lv.3 and I have 45 (or more) copies of it without trading?! A: So far Ive heard this at least twice and it seems to happen to only a certain amount of people and which Chao it affects is random. I dont know if the effect is a bad sign that your game is screwed or if some triggers it. If this has happened to anyone else, please email me so I can figure out what causes it (See Contact Info Section). Q: What is the Special Event/Viral Chao? A: Look at Section 4 to learn more. Q: How can I get the Special Event/Viral Chao? Are events exclusive to US players? A: There are 2 known ways of getting the Special Event Chao: Go the event where the Chao is being distributed or trade with someone who went to the event. If theres any info about any event in any part of the world, I will immediately update the guide before and after the events happen (See Contact Info Section). Q: Is there connectivity between this game and Sonic Unleashed for the Wii? A: I believed this might be a possibly, but so far no. Im not sure about Sonic and the Black Knight though. 8.
