Stand in front of the western gate and use the move spell, draw diagonal lines upward and it should slide to the side.
First you have to get a level up. Talk to Thomas. He should teach you the move spell. Once you've been taught it you can go back to the gate and open it by drawing a huge equal sign on the special moves screen.
