No, you do not need to be close to someone to get their help. You can use the passwords if they are far away. If you lose in a dungeon, just select "get help" or whatever it is, and choose to get your password. Then you can post it here and if someone recues you, then they can post the A-OK mail, and you need to enter it on your game. At least I think that is how you do it. If I am wrong, then say so and I will sell my DS and go jump off a cliff.

No it all works through passwords.
