Um, I started out with piplup which is an alright water Pokemon he just has bad speed. Chimchar has great speed but really good special and regular attack and his defense is pretty good. Turtwig is pretty strong but has slow speed. So it all depends on what type Pokemon you like. I would go with chimchar.

100 KING answered:

I ususally pick fire to start off with because I like it. Then water and then grass. It all depends on your personal preference.

each Pokemon is used equally throughout the game. Like grass is good against bertha in the elite 4 and the 1st gym leader. Fire against the 2nd gym and aron in the elite 4 and water against the steel gym (6th I think) and flint in the elite 4.

so just pick you're favourite.

Aggron306 answered:

They all have their weaknesses, and their strengths.
Of course,Pokemon has developed what we know to be IV's and DV's.AKA,Individual and Dynamic Values.
These stat benefactors help your Pokemon in one or more areas.
These Values are found by fighting Pokemon that usually have a better stat differential in one area, say attack.
If you want to know what starter to use Go to Serebii.net and go to the D/P Pokedex located at the very top of each screen, look up the starter and their stats and decide which one you want.
If you are going for looks I suggest Empoleon or Infernape.
Also take the Gym elements into consideration.Look at the gym's type and if you want a fast start choose the best starter for the first few gyms.
A type chart might be good in this situation.
Hope I helped and said things that you could understand.

P.S. In this game you have three rivals so watch out.

mcyagoman answered:

It depends on what you like. If you start with Turtwig, it is strong against most of the gyms once it is a Torterra (except the 7th) because it is grass-ground type, but almost useless against most of the Elite 4. Piplup is a good starter, but the 2nd and 8th gym can make it difficult to fight with, but will become an Empoleon, who is water-steel type, and combined with strong water or ice attacks, is very strong. Finally, Chimchar is weak against the first gym, but if you level him up quickly, it will become a Monferno, then Infernape, a fire-fighting combo who is VERY strong against a majority of the gyms.
PLEASE RATE THIS!!!

yingyanguy answered:

I chose piplup even though it had bad speed because it's best against the most gym and elite 4 trainers

F4LL3N answered:

Pick turtwig cos he evolves into the best grass type ever invented because it learns earthquake it can pretty much one hit KO any fire Pokemon (except moltres grr)

Cormelo answered:

Get chimchar becuz he is 1 of only 2 fire families in D/P

rayquazaX2 answered:

I personally chose piplup as my starter, hes great for those powerful specials but lacks the speed but his defence will keep him alive if you are fighting a speedy pokemon.

Lugia_Dude answered:

I always pick the fire type. Some people might think "Oh, Chimchar's a fire type and the first gym is rock types.Fire is weak against rock. I had better pick Piplup, a water type.". Well I disagree. Note the following reasons:

1. Chimchar evolves into Monferno, a Fire/Fight type. He learns Mach Punch when Chimchar evolves, so it only takes 2 hits to beat each of the first gym leaders pokemon.

2. If you have a friend who chose Piplup, it will eventually evolve into Empoleon. Water types would usually beat fire types,but... Empoleon is half steel!!! When you get Infernape, it learns probaly the most powerfull fighting move in the whole game.Fighting is super-effective to steel, which means you will beat them if you battle them in the union room.

3. Rock is super-effective against fire. But when Chimchar evolves, he is half fighting. Rock is not super-effective any more.

FireKing1495 answered:

I would Say Chimchar is the best starter cause he/she whips out your rivals starter cause he will ecome a Fire Fighting which is really good

killr trainer answered:

I would say probably PIPLUP

Because when he evolves into Empoleon he can learn Blizzard! Which can 1 hit KO your Rivals Tortera (Ice is super effective against grass and ground)

Hope I helped!
