Help with singapore please

Can anyone hlpe me please, I am in singapore and can seem to go anywhere, I have gone through 2 doors and have found the whip but now can't see where to go, there is a red square on the floor but don't know what needs to be done(if anything) with this. All I seem to do is fall in the water, it's really frustrating.
Also - how do you open chests?

You need to equip the bamboo pole go up to the red square and press A or B. To open chests just walk up to them and press A or B.
