If you want a dog with much talent, try to buy the most expensive dog in the range 400+. Try not to rush your pet, or making it do what it does not want to do. If you are out of food, play with your pet to earn money and buy it at the Goodz store. Look at the growth chart on the top screen(at home of course). See that green line with the heart on top? To pass that you must play with your dog. When you do pass it, your dog is old enough to "make a puppy".
