Need help getting past level 9

How do you conquer the big furnace???

I was able to put out all of the flames shooting out at me, & then there's a big shaking scene....but then the flames are still coming out from the top & there'e no way to shoot water at that area. I keep getting attacked by chairs & dogs while trying to figure out the last stage of killing the furnace & then I run out of lives.
Does anyone know how to beat this??????? It's a shame because I'm only at 45% but can't play the game further until I figure this out.
