how come they can't feel like it???

i keep asking claire, james, and kumiko to do something, but they don't feel like it.

This is probaly because they're relationship with you is not so great. If they don't like you, they won't help you. It is possible to remedy this situation though. Every morning, ask them how they are. You'll here a sort of chiming noise. This means that the relationship between the two of you have grown. But only ask them once a day, or else they'll get mad. Another way is to make a lunchbox, and tell them you have a gift for them, and give the lunchbox as a gift. I believe this can also only be done once a day. If you have a bath built, using that will also help boost relationships.
