Question for Final Fantasy III

Im in the temple of tides and stuff
But I was wondering like with the book of fire and likethe fire staff
The fire staff saysthat it casts fire but when I attack with it on my white mage it dosent do anything but a normal attack
And also the book of fire and ice and stuff it says they have 32 attack but they hardly do anything
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
And also whats the best job formation?
I have the main as a black mage
Arc as a theif
Ingus as a knight
And refa as a white mage

I had the exact same problem (with the staff). What you do to use Fire with the staff is you go to items (in a battle). If the staff is equipped, press up and select the staff. Otherwise, you'll have to move down the list of items and weapons until you find it.

And for the book, make sure that the character who is using the book is in the front line. If that's not the problem, you should try increasing the job level so he/she can make more hits.

And last (but not least), I would think that the best formation for that team is having the black mage and the white mage in the back row, and the thief and the knight in the front row. That is, unless the thief has two ranged weapons (such as boomerangs), in which case, the thief should be in the back row with the mages.

Ave you got you're scholar in the front? And has he got job sickness because that reduces his attack
Also the job formation shud be:
Luneth:warrior
Arc:black mage (because he has the best intellect and can take off a huge amount)
Refia:white mage
Ingus:red mage
