Question for Final Fantasy III

I'm stuck at the Viking place. I learned from other help sites that you are supposed to walk up to the statue of the serpent in the Nepto Temple, but I have pressed A button on the statue several times and nothing happens. How do I get deeper into the shrine to defeat the giant rat?

The same thing happened to me. You have to go back to the Viking town place and talk to the leader of the Vikings. When you go back to the town, continue walking straight when the path turns left and go through a door, the leader will be inside. After you talk to him you will be able to go up to the statue and enter the dungeon.
