Take the 3 matches that are sticking out on the left hand side and put 2 of them on the right - to make a large square and the 3rd one goes inside the box to make the small square. You will see when you put the 2 in place. Good luck

which two matches do I move first? as I have tried this and it does not work?
hillmate answered:

Take top match(from 3 on left) and put on right to join top match with middle, lying flat, take bottom match on left and put on right side to join middle flat match with bottom one, last match you put inside box to join middle flat match with bottom. You make a big box with a little one in bottom right hand corner. I rebought game just to try to help you.
