If you select evidence -> items, then select the bigger spring. double select it so that you can see the information. select the magnifying scope and take a closer look at the break. then select evidence -> items again and select the smaller peice of the spring. drag this to the combine tab at the top, this will then give you the complete spring.
hope this helps as i also struggled on that part
