Any advice for Mission 15?

I have been trying to clear Mission 15 for over three years now. I keep trying to follow the hint and use the black cats at the top of the screen to get a chain of 10 (presumably left-to-right; can't be two-directional)…but this hasn't even got me close to the solution. I tried every way I can think of to use the blank spaces in the middle of the grid…but no luck.

…Am I doing something wrong? Did I overlook something important?
(It doesn't help that there are no online walkthroughs for me to refer to… Asking here is my only option now.)

I'd appreciate any advice you could give me, and so would anyone else stuck on the same mission. Thanks in advance.
