Getting Around When You Just Can't

Added:

Banjo-Kazooie is all about the puzzles that Nintendo has managed to squeeze in and divert everyone's attention from reality.

It's also filled with cheats (if Team SuperCheats can document them...). Here is Crossy's classic take on the game:

Control: 9

As the first of two games, you would expect the character to have limited movement, but consider that this is a general RPG.

As both Banjo and Kazooie utilize each other in executing their moves, the set provided makes for a very good defense.

The only problem: the moves have to be learned progressively (Bottles teaches them).

Environment: 10

For a 64-bit game, this isn't bad at all. The world through which Banjo and Kazooie must traverse is connected by Gruntilda's Lair, the common dominion of the fiendish witch Gruntilda.

Every course is themed appropriately and diversely, and Click Clock Wood is a gamer's nightmare.

Put that together with the characters always being prone to attack and injury (unless, of course, you've applied the Infinite Gold Feathers code), and the final result is something a gamer will respect.

Tact: 8

The objective is to rescue Tooty from Gruntilda's unorthodox transmogrification process, and it isn't very easy in the later stages. However, with the generous applications of cheat codes, the rescuing part can be done rather easily.

In the end, however, you will be required to physically ground Gruntilda, and I don't mean just the broomstick.

The only bad part is that, after Gruntilda's downfall, the cast leaves you hanging with stuff about Banjo-Tooie and the requirement that the gamer find all of the Jiggies to go farther.

Graphics and Sound: 7

The graphics are good to some extent, and the sound program is good for the Nintendo 64. The theme songs are appropriately thematic and suggestive. However, the problem is that there is no coherent dialogue, just characteristic sounds and subtitles.

Enjoyment: 10

A must for a gamer that subscribes to the philosophy that you have to be in to win.

Final Grade: 94 (A)
