The best strategy when buying upgrades is to buy them in order of importance. The most important upgrade is the ranged weapon upgrade as it is the most useful, the least important is the health upgrade.
When you upgrade a piece of armour you will increase it's Hit points. Upgrading either the ranged or the melee attack will increase it's power.
