I read a comment concerning how to get liana in the game. It mentions looking in inventory to "activate" liana which makes no sense to me. I have an ax but still cannot get liana. What's the problem?

You need to wait until you reach the point in the game storyline when the trick to chopping liana with the axe gets unlocked. Before then, even if you know how to recognize liana and try targeting it with your axe, nothing will happen (aside from you probably getting gored by a boar). Just be patient and do the storyline quests... But don't forget to cook food regularly.
You need to get far into the game to unlock it,so do tasks first or by it with gems
