The "best shot" depends on your weapons & what plane you are attempting to shoot down. I read many Captain & lower rank players like the combination of the small-range machine gun & the high-spread machine gun. Personally, I like the small-range & cannon. If I am carrying a torpedo or bomb, I use the small-range. This is after experimenting for a year+. They work for me. You need to find the combination that works for you.

Too many players think rockets are the end-all & do-all of weapons. You see players fire six multi-rockets indiscriminately toward the competition, usually at a great distance. The multi-rockets do little damage to planes like the P-47 or IAR80. High explosive & regular missiles are similar in a dogfight. It's getting the timing of the missile shot perfected.

The best shooters in dogfights take great angles. Lined up straight in front of your enemy (for a short time) is a great missile shot. Following directly behind the enemy is great for guns or missiles. Any plane has a great attack position from above the enemy. Attacking from below your opponent can work if you practice, however it can be turned around against you quickly. Side attacks yield few results except a quick strafing. Once you are in a favorable position, do not go full speed. If you are behind an enemy, his immediate reaction is to evade you by speeding up & turning. If you do not go full speed, you can follow-use beller angles to keep behind him. Also, don't shoot, if you have no shot. When the shooting stops, 9 times out of 10, you opponent will straighten out again. Then take your follow-up shots.

Basic rules, strategies & maneuvers developed during WWI by Oswald Boelke & still used by modern fighter pilots today are described at -

These are pertinent today & work in the game.

Finally, practice on the single player side. Develop 2-4 tactics that work. And do not forget about defense. Then go to multi-player and try them out. Then compete against players at & above your level. That is the only way to add to your skills. Remember- Rome was not built in a day, however, it burned down in a day.

Peace...

CAREFUL - Player named Doodoohead is a cheat...No body can shoot a player down without firing a missile or guns - this guy can. All you have to do is see him.
