How do you explore the caves? I try and go into the caves but I always get scared away by the little person that's in there and I don't get a chance to interact with them.

I think you have to get a warrior, which you can get after Emila Quickblade's quests.
You have to get a warrior through the Emily Quickblade storyline. These people are gnomes. You can "kill" them for items. You can only pass after victory.
