This is a server issue which is caused when you button-mash during a Gym fight. To help prevent this from happening tap the buttons at a more normal rate after each of your strikes land.

This is the on the developers end. The servers are not the best, and there's nothing you can do about this. Sadly completely closing the app and reloading is the only solution.
