Usually, if you move too far away from the spot of encountering a Pokemon, it will flee in a ball of smoke. Sometimes higher leveled Pokemon can do the same at will.

I have had many higher level Pokemon turn to smoke and dissapear. It is very frustrating after using many balls to try and capture the them then "poof"!
