When you need building materials for something and it has to collect 'from gems' what does that mean? For example, if you are in the crafting building. Some of the materials needed may say, 'from gems'. What gems?

I’ve come to understand it to mean the “challenge” is over, and you didn’t reach the end / complete the task…but if you want to “buy” yourself to completion for that task, you would do that by using your purple gems.
