In the beggining of a race, is it possible to get a boost the other cars have?

Other cars tend to have faster acceleration, although I did once get an immediate adrenaline at the start. I'm sure it has something to do with timing but I've never been able to imitate it. Unfortunately in the race I crashed and my rare gem acceleration was wasted.
