Upgrade your active party members using heroes that you have recruited but have no intention of using. Upgrading your heroes strengthens them and gives them better level-up boosts. Just remember that if you do decide to use a hero you have recruited as upgrade fodder they will permanently disapper if your upgrade attempt fails.
