It is recommended that you play How to Say Goodbye on the Nintendo Switch as doing so will give you the benefit of both traditional controls and the touch screen. If that is not an option you will have no choice but to try and get used to the angled nature of the stages.
It is essential that you try and keep track of which doors you have already been through and remember how you arranged the characters in front of each door. If you don't do this you will end up finding yourself having to solve the same puzzles multiple times if you need to backtrack or go through certain rooms more than once.
Keep in mind that all the puzzles in How to Say Goodbye can be recovered from if you make a mistake. You do however always have the option of resetting a stage by returning to the main menu, just remember that the game only saves at the end of each chapter.
Puzzles in How to Say Goodbye are based on sliding characters and objects along a grid until the characters are aligned with the exit door. In order to achieve this you may have to push buttons, turn windmills, or use keys and other tools to help you.
- Keys
In How to Say Goodbye you can move a key to you, especially if a character must remain on a button. Any character can use a key once one of them collects it, this means if one character is stuck, you can have another character find the key for them.
- Windmill Devices
In order to raise or lower the platforms the windmill-like devices control you need to move the spaces in front of them. Make sure you keep your character at a distance so they don't move, too, and then once the platform is where you want it, move the ghost where they need to go without turning the windmill further.
How to Say Goodbye is a beautiful narrative puzzle game inspired by picture books, move the environment to help the characters escape the world in which they are lost. Use the walkthrough below as a guide if you find you are struggling with any aspect of the game.
