However, plot-related spoilers will not be included, so no worries there. A further warning! This Guide contains OPINIONS. I shall assume you, the reader, are intelligent enough to know what those are. Do not interpret the expressed opinions contained within this guide as factual, as it is the opinion of me, the creator, and therefore is not confined to such concepts as right and wrong. ------------------------- Version History ------------------------- :::Version 0.1::: November 8, 2005 Begun the creation of this guide, which includes the warnings and introductory steps of the guide. :::Version 0.3::: November 9, 2005 Started work on characters. :::Version 0.4::: November 12, 2005 Continued working on the characters. This thing's turning out to be bigger than I thought it would... :::Version 0.66::: November 14, 2005 Finished most information on all the characters and put together the Closing. :::Version 0.8::: November 15, 2005 Finished everything for the characters. I've done the initial equipment from memory, so there might be a few errors in it, and I also can't remember Ena's attribute. Finished the two tables and compiled the class stat comparison data. :::Version 0.88::: November 16, 2005 Fixed a few errors and miscues. Added Skills. Still can't remember Ena's attribute... :::Version 0.89::: November 20, 2005 Made a few fixes and added a note to the Stat Comparison section. Started work on the Items and Accessories section. :::Version 1.0::: November 21, 2005 First complete version is finished! I added numerical rating for the characters, despite my better judgment. Also added the stat cap information for each class. Updated recruitment info on Devdan, and completed the Items and Accessories section. Put a few of the opinions users have given me into the guide. Also, a huge thanks to Sui89 for contributing a lot of information to this update, as well as the enriching conversation over the past few days. ------------------------- Introduction ------------------------- Hello, glad you could be with us today. My name is Shawn Simms, and this is the first guide I've attempted for GameFAQs. This is a guide to the characters of the game Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance for the Nintendo Gamecube. In this guide, I'll include the basic information about each character in the game, and sum them up with my own opinions. Do remember that these are only opinions of the characters, and you should regard them as such. I created this guide to provide someone who has just started the game with information about the characters and help them decide which characters they'd want to use. Also, this guide can be used as an alternate opinion of the characters to someone who has already played the game. You are free to agree or disagree with the opinions in this guide, and are encouraged to send me your own opinions as well (see next section). ------------------------- Contact ------------------------- If you wish to contact me in regard to this guide, send your e-mails to thinkaboutayellowrubberduck (at) yahoo.com. Sorry for the long address there. Generally, I will accept the following: -:: Corrections of errors that I made, whether it be typos, factual errors, or information that I may have missed. Always good to keep the guide accurate and improving. -:: Any comments or suggestions you have about the guide. I'm always looking to improve the quality of the guide, and I appreciate them as long as you aren't stupid about it. -:: General questions about the game, not including strategy or help with completing the game. That's what Walkthroughs are for. If I get some questions, I may put them in a FAQ section in a later version. -:: Your opinions of the characters. I'm always open to other people's opinions. It is in that spirit that I've created this guide. However, if you do send your opinion, I ask that you be intelligent about it, as I'll explain next. Generally, I will ignore/delete the following: -:: Outright flames regarding my opinion of the characters. You are free to disagree with me, but keep your opinions formal and civil. Flames will only waste my time, as well as yours. -:: Questions regarding how to beat the game. In that regard, there are various Walkthroughs already available for view on GameFAQs. I would recommend using one of those for help with the game. -:: E-mails full of unintelligible drivel. I'm not going to bother myself with deciphering e-mails that are difficult to read. Use at least decent grammar and refrain from using a lot of 1337 speak or otherwise distracting material. I have reconsidered my stance on other sites hosting my FAQ. If you want to host my FAQ, you may e-mail me first, and I'll take it into consideration. You are welcome to contact me as long as you follow the guidelines above. If you send me your opinions, I may add them to this guide in future versions, as it is always helpful to have various opinions on the characters. ------------------------- About This Guide ------------------------- With the information this guide will contain, it is bound to be rather big. If you're looking for something in particular and using Internet Explorer, be sure to use the Ctrl + F feature to help you find specific information within this guide. Each character has a "quick search code", located in the Table of Contents. Simply copy and paste the code of the character you wish to view, and use the quick search to jump right to it. Basic knowledge of the game is required to fully understand this guide. At best, one who has read the instruction booklet thoroughly shouldn't have any problems understanding the content of this guide. The format of this guide is relatively simple. I'll list the character's name as well as some basic information about the character, the character's class, and his/her Attribute, Build and Movement. After that, I'll include the items the character comes with, and their weapon information. Then, I'll add the character's Skills, Skill Points and Master Skill. Next, the character's growth rates, base stats and stat caps. I'll also include the chapter in which the character is obtained and a short method of how to obtain them. After that, I'll list the character's support options. Then, finally, I'll offer my opinion of the character. I'm now going to add number ratings to the characters, even though it is against my better judgment. Ratings are definitely subject to change slightly, as I'm rather picky about rating in numbers. Here's an example of how it should look: ::::::::Character's Name:::::::: [cctr0] Character information... Let's get this thing started. ****************************************************************************** II. The Characters ****************************************************************************** ::::::::Ike:::::::: [Lord0] Ike is the main protagonist of the game. He's a young and inexperienced kid eager to prove his worth. He's the son of Greil, leader of the Greil Mercenaries. He aspires to be equal to his father and one day take command of his company. Ranger --> Lord Attribute: Earth Build: 9 Move: 6 ~Equipment~ Iron Sword Iron Sword Iron Sword Iron Sword Vulnerary Weapon Proficiency - Sword: D ~Skills~ None Skill Points - 20/20 Master Skill: Aether ~Growth Rates~ HP: 75% Speed: 55% Strength: 50% Defense: 40% Magic: 20% Resistance: 40% Skill: 50% Luck: 35% ~Base Stats~ Level: 1 HP: 19 Speed: 7 Strength: 5 Defense: 5 Magic: 1 Resistance: 0 Skill: 6 Luck: 6 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 28 Strength: 26 Defense: 24 Magic: 20 Resistance: 22 Skill: 27 Luck: 40 Recruit in Prologue. Ike joins automatically before the Prologue... obviously. ~Supports~ Titania Oscar Soren Lethe Reyson Ranulf Elincia ~My take~ Ike is one of the best Lords in Fire Emblem history. He's the main character, so you're forced to use him, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. His growth rates, sans Luck, are all extremely good. Early on, he should be one of your strongest units, as he grows extremely well. His Defense makes him a sturdy character and you won't have to worry about his safety so much as a lot of your other characters. For the long-term, Ike is definitely a force. He'll probably max Skill and Speed. Along with that, he's got very good HP, Strength and Defense, making him a very diverse unit. What really makes Ike shine, though, is his Master Skill. You should definitely save an Occult scroll for Ike, because Aether is one of the best Skills in the entire game. With Aether, Ike can deal massive damage to his enemy as well as heal himself. Combine that with his relatively good Defense and he'll be very easy to keep alive. It's a good thing, seeing as how it's Game Over if he buys the farm. If, for whatever reason, you choose to give all of your Occult scrolls to other characters, other Skills that would prove useful are Resolve and Vantage, which will make him almost indestructible at half HP. Overall, Ike is among the best units in the game. He has all-around great stats with his only weaknesses being his merely decent Luck and Resistance. Do be warned, though, it seems Ike is rather easily Strength-screwed. ~Rating~ 9.5 Strength, Skill and Speed are all great, and Aether definitely helps. Would get a ten if he could evade a bit better early in the game. ::::::::Titania:::::::: [Tnia0] The Deputy-Commander of the Greil Mercenaries, Titania is Greil's second-in- command. She's a former Knight and Greil's most trusted soldier. Titania is an honorable and intelligent Mercenary and is close to Commander Greil. She serves as an advisor to Ike through most of the game. Paladin Attribute: Light Build: 8 Move: 9 ~Equipment~ Steel Axe Iron Axe Vulnerary Weapon Proficiency - Lance: C, Axe: A ~Skills~ Counter - 10 Skill Points - 10/20 Master Skill: Sol ~Growth Rates~ HP: 80% Speed: 50% Strength: 45% Defense: 40% Magic: 25% Resistance: 45% Skill: 60% Luck: 45% ~Base Stats~ Level: 1 HP: 33 Speed: 14 Strength: 12 Defense: 11 Magic: 4 Resistance: 7 Skill: 13 Luck: 11 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 27 Strength: 25 Defense: 27 Magic: 20 Resistance: 26 Skill: 26 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 1. She is available automatically at the start of Chapter 1. ~Supports~ Ike Boyd Rhys Mist ~My take~ A lot of people bash Titania because of her low base stats and fail to see that her growth rates are exceptional. Her presence is a blessing in the first few chapters, as she'll be, without fail, your strongest unit. At the beginning, Titania should be used as a utility unit. By that, I mean bait for enemy units, as a shield for your army or to weaken bosses for your weaker characters to kill. You should only permit Titania to get kills if it is absolutely necessary, as she will steal experience from your unpromoted characters that need it far more. Typically, you should start using her as an active unit about half way through the game. Her power throughout the game is rather unique. She will start off much stronger than any of your characters. As the rest of your characters grow, they will eventually catch and surpass Titania in power. And what a lot of people fail to realize is that her superior growths will allow her to then reach her full power, which is in reality quite comparable to the rest of your army. Counter is a rather useless Skill that I would recommend deleting as soon as you have more useful Skills available. Some good Skills for her are Adept and Guard, allowing her to strike quick and hard and avoid being counter attacked. Guard may also be replaced with Savior or Vantage. Also, you might want to teach Titania her Master Skill, Sol, as it will allow her to heal any damage she might take. You get four Occult scrolls, so it's worth considering. At her full power, Titania is a good dodger with much greater Resistance than most non-magic units. She may have trouble causing damage to higher-defense units due to her mediocre Strength, but that's her only fault. ~Rating~ 8.5 Excellent dodging ability as well as Resistance. If only she had a bit more Strength... ::::::::Boyd:::::::: [Boyd0] Boyd is a member of the Greil Mercenaries, and a sort of rival to Ike. He appears to be rather arrogant, but is really just confident and outspoken. Rolf and Oscar are his brothers. Fighter --> Warrior Attribute: Fire Build: 10 Move: 6 ~Equipment~ Iron Axe Vulnerary Weapon Proficiency - Axe: D ~Skills~ Tempest - 5 Skill Points - 15/20 Master Skill: Colossus ~Growth Rates~ HP: 75% Speed: 45% Strength: 60% Defense: 25% Magic: 5% Resistance: 25% Skill: 50% Luck: 35% ~Base Stats~ Level: 2 HP: 30 Speed: 6 Strength: 7 Defense: 5 Magic: 0 Resistance: 0 Skill: 4 Luck: 4 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 27 Strength: 30 Defense: 25 Magic: 20 Resistance: 20 Skill: 28 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 1. He is available automatically at the start of Chapter 1. ~Supports~ Titania Mist Brom Ulki ~My take~ Ah, Boyd. He's the only Warrior available in the entire game, and the only axe-user for a good deal of it. Well, other than Titania, but we know better than to use Titania in the beginning, don't we? It shouldn't take long for Boyd to become a powerhouse. Look at that nice and shiny 60 next to his Strength growth. As much damage as Boyd can dish out, he'll take just as much in return due to his rather shady base Defense. Even with his outstanding HP, it will take a bit of work to keep Boyd on the front line due to the damage he'll be taking. He has good Speed growth, especially for a Warrior. He shouldn't have much problem double-attacking, and with his high Strength, he'll be capable of dealing a lot of damage in one round. What hampers him, though, is his bad Defense growth. Not a lot of Skills fit well with Boyd. You might just take the easy road and give him Colossus and your Statue Frags. There are better candidates for those Occult scrolls, though. Tempest in ornamental and should be deleted. Miracle might work for him, with all the damage he'll be taking. Pair that with Resolve and he should be able to do good damage with minimal risk. You could also give him Smite to take advantage of his decent Con, or Counter, since he'll be taking a lot of damage the Counter strike should do decent damage in return. The Warrior class has very good Caps. Sadly, though, Boyd doesn't have the growths to reach them. His Skill pretty decent, but paired with low-accuracy axes, he is prone to missing. He's also quite vulnerable because of his low Defense and Resistance. In Boyd, you have a High damage, low defense unit that is prone to missing. He's a decent enough dodger that he can survive on the front lines, but his Defense really hinders him a lot. A plus is that he can perform the Triangle Attack with his brothers. ~Rating~ 7.5 A powerhouse with good Skill and Speed. Doesn't evade well enough to make up for what he lacks in Defense and Resistance. ::::::::Oscar:::::::: [Oscr0] An experienced member of the Greil Mercenaries, and brother to Rolf and Boyd. Oscar was once a Crimean Knight, but he was forced to leave them to help take care of Rolf after their parents died. Greil took them in and treated them as a family and Oscar became one of Greil's most trusted soldiers. Lance Knight --> Paladin Attribute: Earth Build: 10 Move: 8 ~Equipment~ Iron Lance Vulnerary Weapon Proficiency - Lance: C ~Skills~ None Skill Points - 15/15 Master Skill: Sol ~Growth Rates~ HP: 55% Speed: 45% Strength: 45% Defense: 35% Magic: 20% Resistance: 30% Skill: 50% Luck: 30% ~Base Stats~ Level: 3 HP: 26 Speed: 7 Strength: 6 Defense: 8 Magic: 1 Resistance: 0 Skill: 6 Luck: 5 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 27 Strength: 26 Defense: 27 Magic: 20 Resistance: 25 Skill: 26 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 1. He is available automatically at the start of Chapter 1. ~Supports~ Ike Kieran Tanith Janaff ~My take~ Oscar is one of the most useful characters early on. He has very good base stats and uses Lances, which is probably the most useful of weapons early on. He tends to receive good Skill and Speed early, so he is a reliable double- attacker with good Hit. His great base in Defense allows him to take a fair amount of punishment before requiring attention. Even so, he's no wrecking ball. He will get knocked around if you leave him in tough situations. Oscar has good growth rates all-around, and will thus be useful in a number of scenarios. He'll be able to evade a lot of attacks as well as deal good amounts of damage. He'll also be relatively sturdy due to pretty good Defense, and his Resistance will usually turn out fairly good as well. He's skilled in a number of stats and has very few weaknesses. He's a mounted unit, so Savior is always a good choice for a Skill. Combine that with Adept for good results. If you want a more offensively intimidating Oscar, you could always opt for the Resolve/Wrath combination. Sol is also a good choice, if you've got a spare Occult scroll handy. Oscar also has the ability to use the deadly Triangle Attack with his brothers, provided that you opt for him to use bows when he changes class. Overall, I find Oscar to be the best Paladin of the six available, due to his well-roundedness and efficiency in many areas. He's likely to max, or come close to maxing, Strength, Skill and Speed, which has always been one of the best stat combinations for me. ~Rating~ 9.5 Strength, Skill, Speed and Defense. Great all-around. ::::::::Rhys:::::::: [Rhys0] Rhys is a member of the Greil Mercenaries. He's generally a do-gooder and the type who wants to help everyone. Priest --> Bishop Attribute: Fire Build: 8 Move: 5 ~Equipment~ Heal Vulnerary Weapon Proficiency - Staff: D ~Skills~ Serenity - 5 Skill Points - 15/20 Master Skill: Flare ~Growth Rates~ HP: 40% Speed: 40% Strength: 5% Defense: 25% Magic: 60% Resistance: 55% Skill: 50% Luck: 50% ~Base Stats~ Level: 4 HP: 20 Speed: 4 Strength: 0 Defense: 0 Magic: 8 Resistance: 12 Skill: 7 Luck: 6 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 25 Strength: 15 Defense: 20 Magic: 29 Resistance: 30 Skill: 22 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 2. He joins automatically at the start of Chapter 2. ~Supports~ Titania Mia Rolf Kieran Ulki ~My take~ The only Priest in the entire game, and the only person who can ever use light magic. He's also your only healer for the first part of the game. Rhys is invaluable early on. His ability to heal wounded allies is extremely valuable. Be sure to keep him out of the enemies reach, though, because he'll go down quickly if he's attacked. Rhys is a pretty reliable character as he tends to get great Magic, Skill and Luck. Later on, you can give him Nosferatu and he'll be able to stay on the front lines relatively well. Serenity is worthless. Good Skills for Rhys are Miracle and Counter, due to the damage he'll take. Provoke might be good to drain enemy mage's long range spells, due to Rhys' incredible Resistance. Be sure not to put him on the front lines if you do that, though, or he *will* get killed by the melee fighters. Expect Rhys to max Magic, Skill and Resistance. He'll also get very good Luck and good Speed as well. His weakness is his Strength. His almost non-existent Strength allows him to be weighed down by the heavier light magic books, which can prevent him from double-attacking, and also hurt his ability to evade. Overall, though, he's a pretty reliable magic caster and very good healer. ~Rating~ 8 Good dodging ability and excellent Magic and Resistance. Gets weighed down due to poor Strength so he has trouble double-attacking later in the game. ::::::::Shinon:::::::: [Shin0] Shinon is one of the more experienced members of the Greil Mercenaries. He's very cocky and rather abrasive sometimes. He has an outright disdain for Ike, whom he feels is getting opportunities he doesn't deserve. He has great respect for Greil and has stuck around even though he feels the work is beneath a person of his ability. Sniper Attribute: Thunder Build: 9 Move: 7 ~Equipment~ Steel Bow Iron Bow Vulnerary Weapon Proficiency - Bow: A ~Skills~ Provoke - 5 Skill Points - 20/25 Master Skill: Deadeye ~Growth Rates~ HP: 75% Speed: 65% Strength: 65% Defense: 50% Magic: 20% Resistance: 40% Skill: 70% Luck: 35% ~Base Stats~ Level: 1 HP: 32 Speed: 13 Strength: 9 Defense: 9 Magic: 6 Resistance: 6 Skill: 15 Luck: 9 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 28 Strength: 25 Defense: 25 Magic: 20 Resistance: 23 Skill: 30 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 3. Later, Chapter 19. He joins automatically at the start of Chapter 3, but leaves your party after Chapter 7. To get him back, you must talk to him with Rolf in Chapter 18 and then defeat him with Ike. He'll become available before Chapter 19. ~Supports~ Gatrie Rolf Janaff ~My take~ Shinon is quite a contradiction. He comes with base stats worthy of a level 10 Archer, but his growth rates are parallel to the Laguz. He joins early, but is gone for eleven chapters through the middle of the game. Right from the start, you should decide if you're going to use Shinon as a main member of your army. If you aren't, you should try to use him as little as possible early on. If you do plan to use him, though, you can afford to use him a little more actively. Getting Shinon a few levels early in the game won't hurt you much, as it'll help later when he comes back under-leveled. He's generally invulnerable and your only reliable ranged attacker for the first chapters that he's available, as Soren won't be doing much damage at that point and Javelins and Hand Axes are too inaccurate. When he returns later, I'd recommend giving him a few levels in bonus experience, as that'll greatly lower the frustration in raising him. He will catch up very quickly and generally doesn't need too many levels before he surpasses most of your army in power. He's got all-around great stats, his only bad one is Magic, which is useless to Snipers anyway. Provoke isn't bad on him, as he's got better Defense than a lot of your melee fighters. He can easily bait enemies in to be destroyed by your army. You might also consider using an Occult scroll on him, as Deadeye will ensure a hit and has a chance to put the enemy to sleep. Alternatives to Deadeye are Wrath, which will essentially make him a death machine at half health, or Adept, to give him an extra attack. Combined with his innate critical rate, those two Skills are extra efficient. If you use him, Shinon will come close to maxing everything except Magic and Luck. He'll be one of the strongest members of your army if you use him. He's reliable and extremely powerful. The choice you have to make is whether or not you want to baby him for a chapter or two when he comes back, or give him some of your hard-earned bonus experience, or alternatively use one of the other bow-users instead for sake of convenience. ~Rating~ 9.5 Excellent stats all-around, and less likely to be RNG-screwed. If he didn't come back so late and under-leveled, he'd be a ten. ::::::::Gatrie:::::::: [Gtri0] A member of the Greil Mercenaries, Gatrie isn't interested in a whole lot. He's very reserved and laid-back and doesn't really care what he's doing as long as there are women involved. He's easygoing and flirtatious around women so much so that he sometimes sounds like a depraved lecher. He's a good guy, though. Knight --> General Attribute: Light Build: 12 Move: 5 ~Equipment~ Steel Lance Iron Lance Vulnerary Weapon Proficiency - Lance: D ~Skills~ None Skill Points - 20/20 Master Skill: Luna ~Growth Rates~ HP: 80% Speed: 25% Strength: 55% Defense: 60% Magic: 5% Resistance: 30% Skill: 55% Luck: 25% ~Base Stats~ Level: 9 HP: 31 Speed: 5 Strength: 12 Defense: 14 Magic: 0 Resistance: 0 Skill: 6 Luck: 5 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 24 Strength: 23 Defense: 30 Magic: 20 Resistance: 25 Skill: 27 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 3. Later, Chapter 13. He joins automatically at the beginning of Chapter 3. To get him back later, talk to him with the newly-recruited Astrid in Chapter 13. ~Supports~ Shinon Ilyana Marcia Astrid ~My take~ The first of the three Generals you get in your army. When you first get him, he's one of the most useful characters on your team. So much so that he rivals Titania in usefulness. Before he leaves your party, Gatrie is practically invincible. Magic is the only thing that will even pose a slight threat to him. A few of the early chapters almost require him to be completed successfully. Melee fighters won't touch him and he's slow enough to weaken enemies so that your low-leveled characters can finish them. Gatrie is a tank, pure and simple. Physical attacks won't hurt him in the slightest, and his good Strength enables him to deal great damage to enemy units. When he returns later on in the game, his usefulness is much lower than in the early chapters. He has terrible Resistance and no Speed at all. Consider it a blessing if Gatrie double-attacks someone. Still, he'll max Strength and Defense and will also have good HP and Skill. His job is to run out onto the front lines and get beat up. He'll take very little damage and do a great deal of his own, but that terrible speed of his does hinder him. Knights can't really make use of a lot of Skills. He has good Con, so Smite would be a good choice. Adept would help him, too, give him a few extra attacks to make up for his non-existent Speed. If you use him to rescue a lot, Savior is also a good Skill for him. If all else fails, Luna would be okay for him as well, as it'll almost guarantee a kill when it activates. That's only if you have an extra Occult scroll, however. Maybe I've just been spoiled by Oswin (a particularly awesome Knight from FE7, the first to be released in the US. Otherwise known as God), but the Knights since have always seemed a bit lacking. Gatrie is a complete powerhouse, able to shell out great damage and take little in return. But he is hindered greatly by the fact that he'll never double-attack. Overall, I'd say he's still my favorite General in this game, despite his rather large weaknesses. ~Rating~ 7 Great HP, Strength and Defense. Lack of Speed and Resistance hurts him a lot. ::::::::Soren:::::::: [Sren0] Soren is rather misunderstood, being that he speaks plainly, bluntly and honestly without regard to other's feelings. I admire that about him and think it's a good quality, but it can rub a lot of people the wrong way. Soren acts as the tactician of the Greil Mercenaries. He harbors a lot of pain and resentment because he is half Beorc and half Laguz. He's fiercely loyal to Ike and has grown attached to him. He is available automatically at the start of Chapter 4. ~Supports~ Ike Stefan ~My take~ It seems Soren is the cause of a lot of controversy among the people who've played this game. They seem to be split into two main groups. Generally, half of the people love him and think he's this powerful signal of uber death. The other half generally despise him, for not really any reason other than to be different from the people who love him so much. He starts off with decent bases, but generally requires a bit of work to raise. He needs constant protection and won't be able to do much damage early. Once he gets going, though, he turns into a very reliable unit. Expect him to easily max Magic, Skill and Resistance. His Speed and Luck are also good, but there is one potentially fatal flaw: His Strength. Soren comes with one of the more useful Skills in the game, Adept. With his good Skill, Adept will activate quite a bit with him, making him a very powerful attacker. Other Skills you might want to consider are Vantage and Miracle. You can fit all three of those Skills on him, and combined they allow him the opportunity to kill a lot with minimal difficulty, and keep damage to a minimum. I wouldn't consider giving him Flare, as his Magic is well high enough to kill people without the need to lower their Resistance, and the fact that you'd have to delete Adept to equip it. Not often something as useful as Adept comes your way for free, best not to squander it. Now, the general argument that people have against Soren is that his Strength lowers his Speed to such a level that it makes him unusable. I find this to be untrue. Now, obviously, you wouldn't want to equip Soren with the insanely heavy tomes. Soren has such high Magic, that he can achieve basically the same results as the other Sages with lower-power tomes. People argue that Soren is too weak to use Rexbolt. That argument would hold water if Soren didn't do the same thing with Thoron as Calill or Tormod would with Rexbolt. Contrary to what you've no doubt been told, you can train Soren in Thunder magic and equip him with ElThunder. He's so powerful that he'll be able to do massive damage and still double-attack with it. ElThunder and Tornado are both decent-power, low-weight tomes that in Soren's hands, become deadly powerful. I find Soren to be the best Sage in the game, but not by much. Only because of his Adept Skill do I consider him the best. It's just better than Celerity and Nihil. There are so many good Sages in this game that it's hard to go wrong. ~Rating~ 9 Powerhouse. Bad Strength and only decent Luck destroy his bid for a ten rating. ::::::::Mia:::::::: [Mia00] A young Mercenary hired by Greil. ::I haven't seen any of her supports, so I obviously don't know a lot about her character. There is sure to be more people I haven't discovered their full character, so expect a lot of rather short bios for a lot of the characters from here on out. Myrmidon --> Swordmaster Attribute: Fire Build: 6 Move: 6 ~Equipment~ Iron Sword Slim Sword Vulnerary Weapon Proficiency - Sword: D ~Skills~ Vantage - 10 Skill Points - 10/20 Master Skill: Astra ~Growth Rates~ HP: 50% Speed: 60% Strength: 40% Defense: 20% Magic: 30% Resistance: 25% Skill: 45% Luck: 45% ~Base Stats~ Level: 6 HP: 21 Speed: 13 Strength: 7 Defense: 7 Magic: 0 Resistance: 2 Skill: 10 Luck: 6 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 30 Strength: 22 Defense: 22 Magic: 20 Resistance: 25 Skill: 29 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 7. She appears from the east entrance shortly after the start of Chapter 7. She will advance toward Ike and initiate conversation automatically. ~Supports~ Rhys Ilyana Largo ~My take~ Mia is the first main sword-user that joins your army, but she should be rather frail compared to most of your army when she joins. Her bases are decent. 7 Strength as a level 6 Myrmidon is always good, as Myrmidons generally keep very low Strength. That isn't always the case in this edition of Fire Emblem, but we'll get to that later. Mia starts rather under-leveled and at a bad time, so leveling her can prove to be tough. She's frail, and she joins at a point in the game where lance-users are in the majority. She'll easily be knocked around early. You have to be careful in raising her and pick your spots or she'll be easily defeated. Once she begins to get some experience under her, though, she'll become a much more competent melee fighter. Her Strength is rather mediocre and she'll never get much Defense, but that is a typical Myrmidon for you. Great Speed and Luck assures an excellent evade ability. Axe-users will have almost no chance against her, and she'll dodge enough blows to keep from getting into a lot of trouble quickly. She's also got very good Resistance for a melee unit. Vantage is a good Skill and once she promotes into a Swordmaster it will help her immensely to kill enemies before they have a chance to take a chunk of her HP thanks to her low Defense. As far as other Skills go, Wrath is definitely a good choice, as at half HP she'll attack first and with her innate critical bonus, Wrath has even more chance to activate. Gamble is always a good choice on a Swordmaster, but the other Swordmasters can generally get more use out of that Skill. Adept will help her do damage with her low Strength, or you could go with Miracle to keep her alive longer on the front lines. She's your classic Myrmidon. If you've played the other American-released Fire Emblem titles, you should easily be reminded of Guy and Marisa. Typical high-evade, low-strength units that rely on dodging attacks for defense and critical hits for damage. In this game, enemies tend to have more Speed and better hit rates than in the past, so her strengths are less evident against the enemies of this game than the others in past games. She's still a dependable unit, but overall, the other Swordmasters tend to be more useful. ~Rating~ 6.5 Nothing but evade. Lacks the Strength to be able to damage enemies. Characters like Mia did well in the last two games, not here where the enemies have better stats. ::::::::Ilyana:::::::: [Iyna0] A young girl that was captured by Daein troops as she was escaping Crimea with her merchant friends. She joins Ike after he helps her out of her predicament. She's always hungry and never seems to get full after her meals. People have gone as far as to call her sickly. Mage --> Sage Attribute: Light Build: 5 Move: 5 ~Equipment~ ElThunder Thunder Vulnerary Weapon Proficiency - Wind: E, Fire: E, Thunder: D ~Skills~ Shade - 5 Skill Points - 15/20 Master Skill: Flare ~Growth Rates~ HP: 45% Speed: 30% Strength: 25% Defense: 15% Magic: 50% Resistance: 50% Skill: 45% Luck: 45% ~Base Stats~ Level: 6 HP: 20 Speed: 9 Strength: 1 Defense: 3 Magic: 8 Resistance: 10 Skill: 10 Luck: 6 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 28 Strength: 15 Defense: 20 Magic: 30 Resistance: 28 Skill: 28 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 8. Talk to her with Ike in Chapter 8. She starts as an enemy toward the northwest of the map. ~Supports~ Gatrie Mia Mordecai Zihark Lucia ~My take~ If you've been using Soren, he should be quite a bit better than Ilyana at the time she joins. She starts with rather sub-par bases at a low level. It will be hard for Ilyana to do damage early on. The ElThunder she comes with certainly helps, but it will take a bit off of her Attack Speed. Shade helps her to stay alive, but until she starts growing, she'll be far inferior to an already growing Soren. After she starts getting some levels, she becomes much better at damaging enemy units. Unlike Soren, she has a Strength growth, so lifting the heavier tomes won't be a problem as she starts to level up. She tends to gain great Resistance, as most mages do, but her other stats seem somewhat lacking. Mediocre Speed along with terrible Defense make her a bit awkward to use. She won't dodge as well as the other mages, nor will she be capable of causing as much damage. Her main strength seems to lie in a utility role, picking off low-Resistance units, weakening tough enemies for your melee fighters, and healing. Shade is an ideal Skill for her, as it allows her to perform her tasks easily without much risk to her. Other Skills you might want to give her are Flare, to help her do damage to all enemies, or Adept to make up for her mediocre Speed. Nihil will disable enemy Skills to allow her to weaken bosses or otherwise annoying enemies with Skills. Overall, most of her stats are mediocre, but not terrible. Her Skill keeps her safe and allows her to stay near the front lines without much risk. Thunder magic was made for her, as it's the most powerful and will help a lot against the Dragons at the end of the game. I find her to be one of the less useful Sages in the game, but she is by no means bad. If you take measures to boost her Speed and give her Thunder magic, she'll become quite powerful. ~Rating~ 7 All-around mediocre stats. Lacks the Speed to double-attack later in the game. Good Magic, Resistance and Thunder magic save her from obscurity. ::::::::Rolf:::::::: [Rolf0] A young member of the Greil Mercenaries. His parents died when he was very young and his brothers, Oscar and Boyd, were on their own taking care of him. Greil took the group in and he's been there ever since. He has no combat experience, and has only recently learned how to shoot a bow from Shinon. Archer --> Sniper Attribute: Wind Build: 4 Move: 6 ~Equipment~ Rolf's Bow Vulnerary Weapon Proficiency - Bow: E ~Skills~ None Skill Points - 20/20 Master Skill: Deadeye ~Growth Rates~ HP: 60% Speed: 50% Strength: 40% Defense: 30% Magic: 20% Resistance: 25% Skill: 45% Luck: 40% ~Base Stats~ Level: 1 HP: 18 Speed: 6 Strength: 5 Defense: 6 Magic: 0 Resistance: 2 Skill: 8 Luck: 4 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 28 Strength: 25 Defense: 25 Magic: 20 Resistance: 23 Skill: 30 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 9. He is available automatically at the start of Chapter 9. ~Supports~ Rhys Shinon Mist Marcia Tauroneo ~My take~ It's either him or Shinon if you want a Sniper, and they're both rather difficult to use. In Rolf's case, he joins almost halfway through the game at merely level 1. If you use him, you might want to invest a bit of bonus experience before you send him out to fight. He's almost a liability on the battlefield when he joins. He'll be doing almost no damage and will be easily defeated if any enemy even looks at him. A lot of people can be turned off by his low level and vulnerability, but if you use him, he won't disappoint. He can't really match Shinon in any stat except for Speed and Luck, and sometimes Resistance. Not to say he's a bad unit, though. He dodges well, and gains pretty good Defense, which will keep him safe should an enemy penetrate your front lines. He's not much weaker then Shinon offensively, but he does tend to critical a lot less, and is very susceptible to Strength-screwage. You've got a clean slate to start with for Skills, but Rolf really doesn't make a good match for a lot of them. You might just want to give him Deadeye, as he'll not be doing as much damage as Shinon and can therefore put more enemies to sleep. Alternatives are Miracle, to ensure his safety, or Nihil for disabling some of the enemies' skills. Don't expect Rolf to be as powerful as Shinon. Rolf's main drawing point is that he's available over the middle of the game, where a solid bow-user will come in handy against the ravens you'll be facing. He's got all-around decent stats and is a better dodger than Shinon is, but Shinon is ultimately better at everything else. Rolf has a lot of room to get RNG-blessed, and will become very strong if that happens, but with that also comes the likelihood of getting RNG-screwed. As I mentioned earlier, his Strength is quite susceptible, as is his Defense. You should use Rolf if you think Shinon is too much of a hassle once he returns, or want a good Archer for the ship missions. ~Rating~ 8 Good Speed, Defense and Luck makes a good combination, but he loses a point for being such a pain in the beginning. ::::::::Mist:::::::: [Mist0] Mist is Ike's little sister. She's young and naive, but grows a lot over the course of the game. She desperately wants to help Ike without being a burden. Cleric --> Valkyrie Attribute: Water Build: 5 Move: 5 ~Equipment~ Heal Vulnerary Weapon Proficiency - Staff: D ~Skills~ Miracle - 5 Skill Points - 15/20 Master Skill: Sol ~Growth Rates~ HP: 50% Speed: 40% Strength: 35% Defense: 15% Magic: 50% Resistance: 40% Skill: 25% Luck: 60% ~Base Stats~ Level: 1 HP: 16 Speed: 7 Strength: 1 Defense: 2 Magic: 4 Resistance: 7 Skill: 4 Luck: 6 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 26 Strength: 20 Defense: 20 Magic: 26 Resistance: 29 Skill: 24 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 9. She is available automatically at the start of Chapter 9. ~Supports~ Titania Boyd Rolf Mordecai Jill ~My take~ Another sorely under-leveled character. She's one of only two units that can heal early in the game. As soon as you get her, you'll notice Rhys is a much better healer. Rhys comes earlier and at a higher level than Mist. If you plan on using Mist, make sure you heal with her on every turn. Mist's lousy base Magic makes her almost useless as a serious healer, but Rhys can take care of the more heavily damaged units. Use Mist to heal the units who just gained HP after leveling up or for units that are down 10 Hp and things like that. I'd also recommend giving her a fair bit of bonus experience to help make her useful faster. When she promotes, she becomes a lot more useful, as she gains the ability to move after acting. This ability can come in handy often, and is something Rhys cannot accomplish. Her Strength is Mediocre at best and she's really best treated as you would a Sage that can use Knives in that regard. Definitely keep Miracle. It activates by Luck and Mist just so happens to have a whole bunch of that. It will help keep her alive if she is attacked, and she generally needs it if she's going to be anywhere near the battle. Her Master Skill is useless, as she won't be doing enough damage to heal herself in return. Guard would be a decent choice, but her Skill is so bad that it won't activate too often. Mist can't make use of a lot of Skills because they won't activate as much as they would on a lot of other characters. Nihil is better suited for other characters, but it would be okay for Mist, as it doesn't require good Skill to activate. The Sages and Rhys are more useful than she is, but she is by no means as terrible a unit as others would say she is. Pound for pound, she's probably the worst unit in the game, but that doesn't stop her from being useful in a lot of situations. If you manage to get her Sword Proficiency to B rank, that Sonic Sword will be more useful on her than any of your other units. She's a decent dodger with good Resistance, but if she gets hit, she'll be in trouble. She has almost no physical strength and has trouble doing damage unless she has the Sonic Sword. Once she promotes, she'll be a good healer with her ability to move again after she heals, but you'll need to keep her far away from the front lines if you expect to keep her alive. Miracle won't save you every time, you know. ~Rating~ 5 Not good at anything. Decent healer and below-average fighter. Nothing more. ::::::::Marcia:::::::: [Mcia0] Her perky personality and casual demeanor make her well-liked by people. She's constantly trying to keep her brother, Makalov, out of trouble. She's a former Pegasus Knight of Begnion, but quit to help her brother and later join up with Ike. Pegasus Knight --> Falcon Knight Attribute: Fire Build: 6 Move: 8 ~Equipment~ Slim Lance Javelin Weapon Proficiency - Lance: D ~Skills~ None Skill Points - 15/15 Master Skill: Stun ~Growth Rates~ HP: 55% Speed: 55% Strength: 40% Defense: 25% Magic: 20% Resistance: 30% Skill: 50% Luck: 40% ~Base Stats~ Level: 5 HP: 20 Speed: 11 Strength: 8 Defense: 8 Magic: 0 Resistance: 6 Skill: 7 Luck: 4 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 28 Strength: 23 Defense: 24 Magic: 20 Resistance: 27 Skill: 26 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 9. In Chapter 3, she will appear rather early and park herself at the entrance of the ship. You must talk to her with Ike, and she'll return in Chapter 9 and head straight for Ike. Talk to her to recruit her. ~Supports~ Gatrie Rolf Kieran Tanith ~My take~ The first Pegasus Knight available, Marcia is quite a pain to keep alive when she first joins. She's under-leveled and tough to raise. She won't be doing much damage when she first joins. She'll also be rather easily defeated if you're not careful with her. For those of you familiar with the previously released American Fire Emblem games, treat Marcia a lot like you did Florina and Vanessa. She'll require almost constant supervision if she's going to stay alive. It'll be hard for her to damage enemies sufficiently throughout the game. She has good base Strength, but her growth is rather paltry. She's got great Speed and decent enough Luck, so she'll evade enough attacks to keep her alive, but her Defense tends to lag. She somewhat makes up for that with decent HP. Ideal Skills for her are Savior and Guard. With her great Skill growth, Gamble might also be a worthwhile skill for her. Especially if you forge her a Slim Lance with max Hit and Critical. Resolve might do her good. She has good HP and suspect Defense, which ensures she'll be at half HP quite often and have enough left over to keep her safe. Stun is rather useless and should only be given to her if you've used all the other Skills and have an extra Occult just lying around. I never liked using Marcia because she is a pain to raise and generally remains fragile over the course of the game. She evades enough to keep her alive, but she generally doesn't evade enough to rely on it and remain on the front lines. She can become strong enough to deal good damage, and is not threatened by magic users thanks to her good Resistance, but she's just so hard to keep safe that the risk often outweighs the reward. ~Rating~ 7 Good Speed and decent Strength. Would be higher if she wasn't so fragile. ::::::::Lethe:::::::: [Lthe0] A high-ranking warrior of Gallia. She holds a grudge against all Beorc, unable to let go of the past. She can at best be described as unfriendly towards Ike and his group. She was ordered by King Caineghis to accompany Ike and his mercenary group. She obeys, despite her distaste. Beast Tribe --> Cat Attribute: Heaven Build: 6 Move: 7 ~Equipment~ Beorcguard Weapon Proficiency - None ~Skills~ None Skill Points - 25/25 Master Skill: Roar ~Growth Rates~ HP: 130% Speed: 70% Strength: 50% Defense: 40% Magic: 5% Resistance: 25% Skill: 65% Luck: 50% ~Base Stats~ Level: 3 HP: 34 Speed: 12 Strength: 12 Defense: 9 Magic: 4 Resistance: 7 Skill: 10 Luck: 15 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 70 Speed: 36 Strength: 26 Defense: 27 Magic: 20 Resistance: 27 Skill: 34 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 10. She joins automatically at the start of Chapter 10, provided that she survived Chapter 9. ~Supports~ Ike Jill Muarim Ranulf ~My take~ One of the first Laguz units you get to use. Laguz units are very unique, and shouldn't be treated like regular units. They grow slowly and generally require a bit of bonus experience if you're going to use one full-time. Lethe joins early and grows well. She'll be quite powerful early on, as she transforms as soon as the battle starts, allowing her to jump right into the action. Her good base stats allow her to be useful from the moment she joins. She's a really easy unit to use, due to her early transformation, and that she excels in Strength, Skill, Speed and Luck. She'll be able to evade, double-attack and deal good damage. Her mediocre Resistance is her only weak point. Putting Skills on Laguz isn't really the best idea. They have 25 Skill Points and generally don't need that many. Your Beorc units have a much greater need for skills. That said, if you want to put some Skills on your Laguz units, it isn't a big deal. A few good Skills for Lethe are Provoke, Wrath and Vantage. That combination will enable her to get a lot of kills, and with her insane evade, she won't take much damage. Lethe is one of my favorite Laguz to use because she almost never takes a hit. As long as you give her a little of your bonus experience every once in a while to keep her leveled, she'll be a reliable unit for you. Even in human form, Lethe will dodge more attacks that she takes. Her Resistance is low, so keep her a safe distance away from magic, especially fire magic. ~Rating~ 9 Excellent dodger who can pile on damage. ::::::::Mordecai:::::::: [mdci0] Mordecai is a simple and gentle Laguz in Gallia's army. He quickly warms up to Ike's group and genuinely cares about the cause of peace between Laguz and Beorc. Beast Tribe --> Tiger Attribute: Water Build: 18 Move: 7 ~Equipment~ Laguz Stone Weapon Proficiency - None ~Skills~ Smite - 5 Skill Points - 20/25 Master Skill: Roar ~Growth Rates~ HP: 150% Speed: 50% Strength: 65% Defense: 40% Magic: 0% Resistance: 20% Skill: 55% Luck: 40% ~Base Stats~ Level: 2 HP: 41 Speed: 8 Strength: 15 Defense: 13 Magic: 2 Resistance: 4 Skill: 8 Luck: 10 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 75 Speed: 34 Strength: 30 Defense: 30 Magic: 20 Resistance: 24 Skill: 33 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 10. He joins automatically at the start of Chapter 10, provided that he survived Chapter 9. ~Supports~ Mist Ilyana Stefan Ulki Ranulf ~My take~ Along with Lethe, he's one of the first Laguz units you get. Mordecai is unique, even among his fellow Laguz units. He takes a while to transform in battle, but once he does, he's a complete tank. When Mordecai joins, it'll be hard for enemies to hurt him. Even when he's in human form, he can traverse the front lines aiding your units and distracting enemies with little risk. When he transforms, he should have no problem tearing through enemy units. As he grows, his usefulness does start to falter. His low Speed becomes more evident and he'll stop double-attacking as much. He'll also become easier for enemy units to damage, meaning he'll need a little protection until he transforms. He has loads of Strength and Skill, so it won't be a problem for Mordecai in the offensive department. Smite is very useful, and you only get one more over the course of the game. Adept will help disguise his Speed problems in later chapters. Nihil will make sure he's safe from enemy Skills, and Resolve will make him a monster at half HP. He's very useful for tanking when he first joins, but as the game progresses, enemy units will be able to hurt him more and more, and he will be able to double-attack less and less. I generally find him to be the least useful of all the Laguz in the game. Later in the game, he's all offense. His Defense will start to falter and he'll need some support in the later chapters. Be sure to give him some bonus experience if you're going to use him. ~Rating~ 7 Great HP and Strength. Speed and Defense lag later in the game. ::::::::Volke:::::::: [Vlke0] Volke is a mysterious Thief that approaches Ike for employment when they need his skills to break into a prison. At first, he is completely introverted and charges money for almost everything. Later, you'll find out his true identity and why he's sticking around Ike. Thief --> Assassin Attribute: Wind Build: 11 Move: 7 ~Equipment~ Knife Vulnerary Weapon Proficiency - None ~Skills~ Shade - 5 Skill Points - 15/20 Master Skill: Lethality ~Growth Rates~ HP: 65% Speed: 65% Strength: 50% Defense: 20% Magic: 5% Resistance: 10% Skill: 55% Luck: 35% ~Base Stats~ Level: 10 HP: 25 Speed: 13 Strength: 12 Defense: 7 Magic: 0 Resistance: 3 Skill: 13 Luck: 7 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 30 Strength: 23 Defense: 22 Magic: 20 Resistance: 20 Skill: 30 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 10. Hire him before the start of Chapter 10. ~Supports~ Bastian ~My take~ Ah, finally have a Thief. About time, too. Volke is the only potential Assassin in the entire game, so I'd suggest using him. His base stats are rather unimpressive, but he'll grow pretty quickly. When you first get him, he'll need a lot of protection. He has good Evade, but not enough to be able to rely on it. His proficiency in both utility and combat will certainly come in handy, especially in Chapter 13. Damn crows. After promotion, Volke becomes terribly powerful. He maxes Strength, Skill and Speed without any problems. He'll also end up with a good amount of HP, especially for a Thief. Lethality is one of the best Skills in the game. You have no excuse not to give it to Volke. If you still don't want to, then good Skills for Volke would be Guard to disable enemy counter attacks and Counter to return decent damage when he gets hit. Lethality makes Volke obscenely powerful towards the end of the game. His stats are very good as well, as he's able to evade a lot of attacks due to great Speed and decent Luck. He maxes Strength easily, but it's a pity all he can use are Knives. He's really dangerous with Stilettos, and shouldn't have much trouble doing damage when he's not killinating everything with Lethality. He has almost no Resistance, so be wary of magic, but otherwise he's a very good unit. ~Rating~ 9.5 Strong, fast and deadly. Loses his bid for a ten with his terrible Resistance. ::::::::Kieran:::::::: [Kirn0] A Knight of Crimea who was captured and imprisoned when Daein invaded Crimea. He considers Oscar his ultimate rival, even though Oscar couldn't care less about such things. Kieran is extremely outgoing, so much that sometimes you just wish he'd stop talking. Axe Knight --> Paladin Attribute: Wind Build: 10 Move: 8 ~Equipment~ None Weapon Proficiency - Axe: C ~Skills~ Gamble - 15 Skill Points - 0/15 Master Skill: Sol ~Growth Rates~ HP: 60% Speed: 40% Strength: 50% Defense: 40% Magic: 15% Resistance: 30% Skill: 50% Luck: 25% ~Base Stats~ Level: 12 HP: 30 Speed: 12 Strength: 11 Defense: 10 Magic: 1 Resistance: 1 Skill: 10 Luck: 8 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 27 Strength: 26 Defense: 27 Magic: 20 Resistance: 25 Skill: 26 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 10. He's cooped up with Brom in the prison cell to the east in Chapter 10. You've got to get Oscar over there to talk with him and he'll join afterward. ~Supports~ Oscar Rhys Marcia ~My take~ Another primary axe-user. Boyd's been the only one for a while now, so Kieran will provide a nice alternative. He's easily usable from the time he joins. Kieran has quite good base stats. He has a tendency to be inaccurate with his low-hit axes. Otherwise, he's quite a dependable unit when he joins. He should be able to take the action on the front lines without a lot of trouble. He's got good HP, Strength and Defense. However, Kieran might start to lag behind in Speed and Defense as you go through the game. He has enough Strength to damage enemies and he generally gains enough Skill to be relatively accurate even with Axes. He's not a particularly good dodger, thanks to his mediocre Luck, and he'll probably start having trouble on the front lines. He starts with Gamble, which is a Skill not very suited for axe-users. It's best to delete it after you've got better ones ready for him. The handy-dandy Wrath/Resolve combo suits him pretty well, but if his Speed is lagging, you might opt to give him Adept and Vantage to minimize his damage taken and help him to attack. Savior is always good for mounted units. Sol is also a good Skill for him, if you could spare one of your Occult scrolls. In the end, Kieran doesn't evade or take hits well enough for my taste. If he could do one or the other just a little better, he'd be a far better unit. Kieran is probably the worst potential Paladin in the game, not that that's saying a lot, since all of the Pallies are pretty useful in this one. He can do a fair amount of damage, but he can be easily Speed and Defense-screwed, so sometimes it's hard to take advantage of his excellent Strength. ~Rating~ 7.5 Good Strength and at least decent everywhere else. Except Resistance, which costs him a fair bit. ::::::::Nephenee:::::::: [Nphn0] I don't know a lot about Nephenee yet. She's just a farm girl from Crimea that was captured and imprisoned for some reason. Suppose she was militia, like Brom. Soldier --> Halberdier Attribute: Wind Build: 8 Move: 6 ~Equipment~ None Weapon Proficiency - Lance: E ~Skills~ Wrath - 10 Skill Points - 10/20 Master Skill: Luna ~Growth Rates~ HP: 55% Speed: 55% Strength: 40% Defense: 35% Magic: 20% Resistance: 25% Skill: 55% Luck: 25% ~Base Stats~ Level: 7 HP: 22 Speed: 11 Strength: 8 Defense: 9 Magic: 2 Resistance: 3 Skill: 10 Luck: 6 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 26 Strength: 25 Defense: 28 Magic: 20 Resistance: 25 Skill: 28 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 10. Locked in the northern cell, you'll need to talk to her with Ike to get her. ~Supports~ Brom Devdan Calill ~My take~ The first Soldier that has been playable for the American-released games, they trade the ability to use multiple weapons for all-around good stats. Nephenee is one of the best units in the game, without a doubt. Her base stats are decent, but she starts at a low level. She won't be able to take front line action without some support. It might be a good idea to give her a level or two in bonus experience to get her leveled up quicker. For a few chapters after she joins, she'll be an easy target for enemies and it can prove difficult to get her enough experience. Your work is ultimately rewarded when Nephenee catches up to your army. She has great stats all-around, except for Resistance. She'll be able to take a decent amount of hits, evade enemy attacks, double-attack and deal good damage all without much problem. What makes her an even better unit is the Skill she comes with. Wrath is a very useful Skill that will help her greatly when she's at half HP. You could give her Resolve to make her a beast at half HP, or you could give her Vantage, which will allow her to obliterate loads of enemies when she's at half HP. If there were a few too many "at half HP"s up there for your taste, I'd recomend Adept or Gamble to make her more intimidating when she's at any HP level. An all-around wonderful unit, Nephenee will be able to do it all. Her only weakness is her Resistance, but she'll even evade most magic attacks. Expect her to come close to maxing Strength, Skill, Speed, and to a lesser extent, Defense. She'll also get very good HP and Luck. She can do almost any job you require without much trouble at all. She's one of my favorite units to use. ~Rating~ 10 Total monster. Great Strength, Skill, Speed and Defense. Good to very good everything else. ::::::::Brom:::::::: [Brom0] A rather neurotic member of Crimea's militia. He was locked up in jail by Daein when they invaded Crimea. He's quite afraid of torture and gets anxious just thinking about it. He is rescued by Ike and in return joins his mercenaries to help drive Daein out of Crimea. Locked up in the eastern cell with Kieran, Brom awaits some fine chap (heh...) to come along and help him so he can see his family again. Talk to him with Ike to recruit him. ~Supports~ Boyd Nephenee Zihark ~My take~ Here's the second Knight you get, but at this point the first one is no longer in your party, so he'll be your only Knight for a few chapters. Most people take one look at him and automatically decide that he's a poor unit. He may not be the best-looking character in the game, but his fighting prowess is better than people give him credit for. When he first joins, he won't seem too Knightly at all. He's only got 13 base Defense, which is good for his level, but average for this point in the game. Don't expect him to do a lot of damage, or double attack. He can survive okay on the front lines, but he really won't be doing a lot while he's there. It can be tough to level him up, because he doesn't contribute much to the battle when he first joins. You might consider using a bit of bonus experience on him to get him caught up. Gatrie is the wall of the group, Brom specializes more in Skill and Speed. He'll be double-attacking a lot more than Gatrie, but he won't be doing as much damage with his attacks or be able to sustain as much damage from enemies. He's more well-rounded but ultimately less useful. Another Knight with no base Skills... not a lot to do with Brom. Smite would be okay, as he's got good Con. Resolve will help him at half HP, and Adept will give him more double-attacks than his low Speed would normally allow. If you've got an extra Occult, Luna wouldn't be bad for him. Combined with his decent Strength he'd be able to kill most units in one hit with that. He's a regular Knight that trades a bit of his Strength and Defense for Skill and Speed. The Skill boost is hardly noticeable, and his Speed is not nearly increased enough. Gatrie's better Strength and Defense trump Brom's better Skill and Speed. Brom is still a dependable unit with good Strength, Skill and Defense. If his Speed was a little better, he'd be the best General in the game. He's generally much better than people say he is, so don't be afraid to use him. ~Rating~ 6.5 Good Speed and Defense. Not enough Strength to do good damage, and even with the best Speed among the Knights, doesn't double-attack enough. ::::::::Zihark:::::::: [Zhrk0] Zihark is a Beorc that wants to help the Laguz who are being treated poorly. He joins a Vigilante group that tends to hunt Laguz from a Crimean town in order to get close to Laguz. Myrmidon --> Swordmaster Attribute: Earth Build: 9 Move: 6 ~Equipment~ Killing Edge Weapon Proficiency - Sword: C ~Skills~ Adept - 10 Skill Points - 10/20 Master Skill: Astra ~Growth Rates~ HP: 55% Speed: 60% Strength: 45% Defense: 30% Magic: 15% Resistance: 20% Skill: 50% Luck: 40% ~Base Stats~ Level: 10 HP: 25 Speed: 15 Strength: 10 Defense: 7 Magic: 1 Resistance: 0 Skill: 13 Luck: 6 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 30 Strength: 24 Defense: 24 Magic: 20 Resistance: 22 Skill: 29 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 11. He's a member of the Vigilante group in Chapter 11, who are standing around toward the northeast of the map. Talk to him with Lethe or Mordecai to recruit him. ~Supports~ Ilyana Brom Muarim ~My take~ The other Myrmidon that joins your army relatively early. His base stats are rather unimpressive, but he grows very well. He won't be hard to insert right into your army when he first joins. His base Strength is decent enough. He'll have little trouble staying on the front line with decent evade and Defense. His growth makes up for his low base stats. He'll become a very competent unit quite quickly. In addition to the customary Skill and Speed that is required for Myrmidons, he also gets very good HP and Strength, as well as decent Defense. His Luck is okay, it's high enough to keep his evade quite high. Altogether, Zihark is a great unit. He's not as frail as most Swordmasters due to good evade and Defense, and he has no problem damaging enemy units thanks to high Strength. He comes with Adept, which is lethal on Zihark. I would recommend never removing it. Add something like Vantage or Wrath for great results. Also, Gamble might not be a bad idea with his naturally high Skill. Zihark fits the same mold as Karel or Joshua from the other American-released Fire Emblem games. That being a Swordmaster that has slightly lower evade than usual, but better Strength and Defense. Overall, he'll become an awesome unit. His Resistance is pretty brutal, but other than that, he has no weaknesses. He's strong, quick and sturdy. But he can get Strength-screwed, which would hurt him quite a bit. Overall, he's my favorite Swordmaster to use. ~Rating~ 9 Excellent Strength, Skill and Speed. Mediocre Luck and Resistance cost him his ten rating. ::::::::Sothe:::::::: [Sthe0] A young Thief from Daein. He snuck aboard the ship Ike's group was traveling in and was allowed to join. Thief Attribute: Wind Build: 6 Move: 7 ~Equipment~ Knife Weapon Proficiency - None ~Skills~ Blossom - 15 Skill Points - 5/20 Master Skill: None ~Growth Rates~ HP: 60% Speed: 65% Strength: 55% Defense: 35% Magic: 10% Resistance: 30% Skill: 70% Luck: 55% ~Base Stats~ Level: 1 HP: 20 Speed: 11 Strength: 5 Defense: 4 Magic: 1 Resistance: 0 Skill: 7 Luck: 5 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 40 Speed: 20 Strength: 20 Defense: 20 Magic: 15 Resistance: 20 Skill: 20 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 12. Read the Info section in your base before Chapter 12 for an opportunity to recruit him. He'll become available afterward. ~Supports~ Astrid Tormod ~My take~ For some unknown reason, Intelligent Systems really loves to screw Thieves over. In FE6, there were three Thieves, but none could promote. This is forgivable since it was their first try. In FE7, the first one released in America, you got two Thieves, and only one could promote, and even then, the one you chose couldn't be promoted until just a few chapters before the end. This time around, they decided to include a completely useless character who can't promote and therefore cannot maintain a use in your party. Sothe is that guy. I understand why he can't promote into an Assassin, but come on. You mean to tell me you couldn't think of an alternative class for him? Or perhaps include the Rogue class, an alternate class from FE8? Come on, IS! He joins at level 1, and grows slower than the Laguz. It's almost impossible to train him unless you give him a crapload of bonus experience. He joins at a time you're fighting against a bunch of powerful Ravens who can kill Sothe in one fight. The first chapter you can really use him is Chapter 16, where his utility skills will come in handy and he might be able to scrape together a few kills. Without bonus experience, he's likely to stay behind and rot because he can't hurt anyone. If you do manage to get him caught up to your army, he'll be a very efficient unit, but not for long. However, since he cannot promote, he's stuck with Thief caps, which means all of his stats, sans Luck and HP, cannot grow past 20. After chapter 20 or so, he begins to look noticeably inferior to the rest of your army. He'll start to become a liability on the battlefield. If you really want to use him, delete Blossom after he reaches level 20. You can also delete it sooner if you wish, whenever you feel Sothe has grown strong enough. Miracle is almost required if you want him to survive on the front lines. Adept will give him extra strikes, which he will need if you want him to kill anything. Guard will protect him from enemy counter attacks. I would advise against using him unless you really, really like him. I won't outright tell you not to use him, as I believe you should make up your own mind. I just warn you that Volke is very, very, superior to Sothe, and Sothe is the only unit in the game that cannot become useful late it the game, thanks to him not being able to promote. Even Mist can be useful in the final chapters if you took the right measures to help make her so. Sothe is simply too weak with his Thief caps to be much use late-game. ~Rating~ 4 Useless later in the game with no promoted class. ::::::::Jill:::::::: [Jill0] Jill is a Wyvern Rider of Daein, a soldier under the command of Haar. She, like most Daeins, holds Laguz in contempt, blinded by blatant prejudice. She follows Ike after he departs for Begnion and upon seeing Ike's ship under attack by bird Laguz, decides to help. Because we all know that it's better to help soldiers of the enemy country than to let evil Laguz scum have their way! ::rolls eyes:: After traveling with Ike for a while, she comes to the conclusion that her ideology is senseless and stupid, and changes her ways. Wyvern Rider --> Wyvern Lord Attribute: Thunder Build: 7 Move: 8 ~Equipment~ Steel Lance Laguz Guard Vulnerary Weapon Proficiency - Lance: D ~Skills~ None Skill Points - 15/15 Master Skill: Stun ~Growth Rates~ HP: 60% Speed: 45% Strength: 40% Defense: 35% Magic: 30% Resistance: 30% Skill: 45% Luck: 25% ~Base Stats~ Level: 8 HP: 24 Speed: 9 Strength: 11 Defense: 11 Magic: 0 Resistance: 2 Skill: 10 Luck: 6 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 27 Strength: 27 Defense: 27 Magic: 20 Resistance: 25 Skill: 26 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 12. She will appear toward the south and begin advancing toward your ship. Make sure Ike is in an easily accessible spot and she will come right up to him and talk to him. ~Supports~ Mist Lethe Haar ~My take~ Finally, a Wyvern Rider. I know Wyvern Riders generally join later than most units, but I love to use them. In a future Fire Emblem, Wyvern Riders should be soldiers of the main country instead of the enemy country, and a Wyvern Rider should be the advisor to the main Lord. I know, it's totally different and Fire Emblem holds to tradition rather than throw an oddball, but I still think it would be interesting. ::Ahem:: Sorry about that... Now, Jill... she's got average bases, and she is a very good alternative to Marcia at this point in the game. When she joins, she tends to have trouble double-attacking and will get tossed around a bit by fast enemies. She has decent Defense and it tends to grow pretty well, which will obviously help her survive on the front lines. Jill has the potential to become a pretty sturdy unit. She seems to gain good Strength and Defense, as well as decent Skill and Speed. All of her growths encompass the realm of 30 to 45, so she doesn't have any notably great growths. Due to this, she's very easily RNG-screwed. A non-screwed Jill should end up with great HP, as well as decent Strength, Skill, Speed and Defense. Keep her far away from magic, as magic will make short work of her. She comes absolutely Skill-less, so feel free to play with different combinations. Jill can make use of a lot of Skills. Guard will keep her from being counter attacked. Nihil is good if you want to use her as a boss killer. Wrath and Vantage is a good combination. Lots of good combinations for Jill. Jill is one of those units that can easily turn out godly powerful but just as easily end up very poor in a lot of stats. Good thing you get an RNG-proof Wyvern Lord later on that easily outclasses Jill if she turns out badly. ~Rating~ 8 Good Speed with otherwise decent all-around stats. ::::::::Astrid:::::::: [Astd0] Astrid is a former Knight of Begnion. She doesn't have a lot of battle experience and is eager to learn more of the art of war. Bow Knight --> Paladin Attribute: Wind Build: 7 Move: 8 ~Equipment~ Iron Bow Knight Ward Vulnerary Weapon Proficiency - Bow: D ~Skills~ Paragon - 15 Skill Points - 0/15 Master Skill: Sol ~Growth Rates~ HP: 45% Speed: 50% Strength: 40% Defense: 30% Magic: 20% Resistance: 25% Skill: 55% Luck: 40% ~Base Stats~ Level: 1 HP: 20 Speed: 7 Strength: 6 Defense: 5 Magic: 2 Resistance: 4 Skill: 6 Luck: 3 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 27 Strength: 25 Defense: 27 Magic: 20 Resistance: 26 Skill: 26 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 13. Talk to her with Ike. I'd recommend doing so on turn 1, through the miracle of Smite/Shove. She just loves to get herself killed before you recruit her. ~Supports~ Gatrie Sothe Makalov ~My take~ Astrid is most efficiently described as a Nomad, from FE7. She joins very, very under-leveled and takes a little work to get her up to par. Thanks to Paragon, it isn't as hard as it looks. She'll be doing almost nothing to enemies when she first joins. She'll fold in one hit from an enemy. She adds nothing to the battle after she first joins thanks to her low starting level. If you train her up, again, think Nomad. If you're familiar with FE6 or FE7, you'll know that Nomads are generally high-evade, low-defense units. That sums Astrid up beautifully. She'll be a decent dodger with rather paltry Defense. She gets mediocre Strength and Resistance. After she's caught up to your army, I'd recommend deleting Paragon. Don't want to get her over-leveled. If you've got a spare Occult scroll, Astrid can definitely use Sol, as she'll take a lot of damage because of her low Defense. If you'd rather teach other character's their Master Skills, then Miracle and Nihil is a good combination for Astrid. Guard and Savior is another decent set. Adept will give her a little more fighting power, if you want to go that route. All in all, Astrid's a decent unit. She doesn't really excel in anything other than evading attacks, so her usefulness is somewhat limited. Even so, she should end up with enough Strength to do decent damage, and with her bows, she makes for a very good ranged attacker. ~Rating~ 7.5 Good dodger with decent Strength. Doesn't excel in anything, but isn't bad in anything either. ::::::::Makalov:::::::: [Mklv0] In short, Makalov is a goof. He's always getting onto trouble and owing people money. His sister Marcia is always trying to look out for him and get him to straighten up. Sword Knight --> Paladin Attribute: Thunder Build: 10 Move: 8 ~Equipment~ Steel Sword Weapon Proficiency - Sword: C ~Skills~ Tempest - 5 Skill Points - 10/15 Master Skill: Sol ~Growth Rates~ HP: 60% Speed: 50% Strength: 55% Defense: 45% Magic: 5% Resistance: 20% Skill: 45% Luck: 25% ~Base Stats~ Level: 10 HP: 30 Speed: 10 Strength: 9 Defense: 10 Magic: 2 Resistance: 2 Skill: 7 Luck: 8 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 27 Strength: 26 Defense: 27 Magic: 20 Resistance: 25 Skill: 26 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 14. He starts as an enemy character in the northwest part of the map. Talk to him with Marcia to recruit him. ~Supports~ Astrid Haar Bastian ~My take~ The last of the Cavaliers you get, Makalov is another character that people take one look at and immediately pronounce a bad unit. If you're willing to ignore your absolute fixation on visual quality, you'd realize that Makalov can turn out to be a great unit. He joins your army under-leveled and with crappy bases. He makes up for that with rather good growth rates. When you first start to use him, he doesn't make for a very good unit. He needs constant protection and can rarely double- attack. It won't take long for him to get going, though. He has terrific Strength, Speed and Defense. He'll end up pretty good in all three of those stats. His Skill isn't too good, and he has very poor Resistance. Don't expect him to evade very well, but his Defense should make up for that. Tempest just sucks. There are far more useful skills out there, especially for a mounted unit that only has 20 possible Skill Points. Adept and Resolve is a good combination. You could also go with Savior, as that's always useful on a mounted unit. If you've no better candidates, you could give him one of your Occult scrolls. Sol wouldn't be too bad on him, as even with his good defense, he'll be taking a bit of damage since he can't evade very well. He's somewhat tough to train, but he'll reward you in the end. With all of the good Paladins in this game, it isn't necessary to train Makalov, but if you want to use him, he should turn out well. I hate to admit it, since I can't stand this guy's personality, but Makalov is a pretty good unit. I prefer Oscar and Geoffrey, but Makalov is definitely worth the time if you decide to level him up. ~Rating~ 8 Good Strength, Speed and Defense. Lack of Skill and Resistance hurt him. ::::::::Stefan:::::::: [Stfn0] A hermit who lives in the deserts of Begnion. He is half Beorc and half Laguz, which tends to cause trouble with both races, so he has decided to live away from regular society. Swordmaster Attribute: Build: 13 Move: 7 ~Equipment~ Vague Katti Weapon Proficiency - Sword: S ~Skills~ Astra - 20 Skill Points - 5/25 Master Skill: Astra ~Growth Rates~ HP: 70% Speed: 55% Strength: 50% Defense: 35% Magic: 20% Resistance: 30% Skill: 40% Luck: 25% ~Base Stats~ Level: 8 HP: 38 Speed: 25 Strength: 19 Defense: 12 Magic: 8 Resistance: 9 Skill: 27 Luck: 5 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 30 Strength: 24 Defense: 24 Magic: 20 Resistance: 22 Skill: 29 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 15. Stefan is no doubt the easiest character to miss in the game. You can find him in Chapter 15 if you take one of your Laguz to the Vague Katti space. If you take a Beorc, you'll only receive the sword, but Stefan will appear to a Laguz and automatically join. The Vague Katti is located in the northeast of the map, two spaces from the top and three spaces from the right. ~Supports~ Soren Mordecai ~My take~ Stefan is another character that people seem to either love or hate. His personality is cool, at any rate, but as far as his battle prowess, well, he's a character you'd likely take or leave. He joins just past half way through the game, and he comes with incredible bases and is easily a powerful fighter from the moment he joins. On Easy and Normal mode, Some of your characters should be starting to promote around the time Stefan joins at level 8 promoted. I would try to hold back from using him a whole lot when he first joins in order to let your other characters catch up to him. His base 27 Skill and 25 Speed are almost max. Stefan will easily max those, as well as having a good chance to max Strength as well. He has decent Defense, but poor Luck and Resistance. His Luck tends to really hurt him in the later chapters. Astra is a decent Skill, and it suits Stefan just fine. But you may want to give him a bit more powerful Skills to make use of his just pure killing power. Adept and Vantage is a good combination. Or you could go with Wrath and Resolve. Any combination of those four is pretty good. Gamble is decent choice as well. Most people regard Stefan as a godly powerful character, and if you look at it a certain way, he is. He's an incredibly powerful fighter capable of dealing massive amounts of damage to enemies. On the other hand, he's only a decent dodger due to his terrible Luck. He's rather easily defeated if he sustains a couple of good hits. It's very evident in the later chapters where he'll die much more easily than a lot of your other characters. It all depends on your playing style. Go with Stefan if you want massive damage. Otherwise, Mia's superb evade and Zihark's sturdiness might be more for you if you would rather have a steady front line fighter. ~Rating~ 8.5 Good Strength, Skill and Speed. Terrible Luck hurts him a lot later in the game. ::::::::Tormod:::::::: [Trmd0] A young boy fighting for Laguz rights. He's the self-proclaimed leader of the Laguz Emancipation Army, located in the deserts of Begnion. He cares deeply about the Laguz and fights to uncover the corrupt society of Begnion and put a stop to it. Mage --> Sage Attribute: Fire Build: 6 Move: 5 ~Equipment~ Fire Elfire Weapon Proficiency - Wind: D, Fire: C, Thunder: E ~Skills~ Celerity - 15 Skill Points - 5/20 Master Skill: Flare ~Growth Rates~ HP: 50% Speed: 45% Strength: 20% Defense: 25% Magic: 45% Resistance: 45% Skill: 40% Luck: 35% ~Base Stats~ Level: 7 HP: 20 Speed: 9 Strength: 2 Defense: 4 Magic: 10 Resistance: 9 Skill: 9 Luck: 8 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 28 Strength: 15 Defense: 20 Magic: 30 Resistance: 28 Skill: 28 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 16. He'll join automatically at the start of Chapter 16. ~Supports~ Sothe Devdan Reyson Calill ~My take~ Tormod holds the distinction of being the last unpromoted Beorc to join your army. Obviously, that suggests that he'll be a bit tough to raise, but it's definitely worth it. He's rather weak when he first joins, but if you pick your spots he's not too hard to raise. You can make it a bit easier if you give him a bit of bonus experience. He won't be able to double-attack very often until he gains a few levels, and the damage he does is pitiful at best. Try to get him a few kills really early, it'll make it easier to train him in that marathon called Chapter 17. After Chapter 17, he should be able to hold his own in fights if you gave him enough kills. His stats are all rather unimpressive overall, but he doesn't have any overly terrible ones either. He'll have trouble maxing even one stat. He's not an example of overall power. What really set him apart from the other Mages is his unique base Skill. Celerity is a Skill unique to Tormod. With it, he can move two more spaces your other magic users. It's definitely useful, and you can't get any more of them. You can use it in conjunction with Adept or Wrath to give him a lot of range and power. Guard and Counter are more defensive Skills if you want a more dependable Tormod. You can delete Celerity if you want, but I would advise against it. He's a well-balanced unit, with few evident weaknesses. He's got good Speed as well as decent Magic, Skill and Resistance. He'll have an easier time double- attacking than your other mages, and with decent Magic, he'll do good damage. Tormod is a very dependable, well-rounded unit with very few obvious strengths and weaknesses. ~Rating~ 8 Good Speed and Defense. No overly good or bad stats. Loses a point for joining so under-leveled. ::::::::Muarim:::::::: [Mrim0] A former Laguz slave, Muarim lives in the desert of Begnion, away from the corrupt society. He and Tormod formed the Laguz Emancipation Army to help the Laguz of Begnion who are being treated as property for the senate. Beast Tribe --> Tiger Attribute: Thunder Build: 14 Move: 7 ~Equipment~ Demi Band Weapon Proficiency - None ~Skills~ None Skill Points - 25/25 Master Skill: Roar ~Growth Rates~ HP: 145% Speed: 55% Strength: 70% Defense: 60% Magic: 5% Resistance: 45% Skill: 70% Luck: 35% ~Base Stats~ Level: 9 HP: 45 Speed: 15 Strength: 16 Defense: 12 Magic: 4 Resistance: 5 Skill: 13 Luck: 11 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 75 Speed: 34 Strength: 30 Defense: 30 Magic: 20 Resistance: 24 Skill: 33 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 16. He'll join automatically at the start of Chapter 16. ~Supports~ Lethe Zihark Largo ~My take~ The second Tiger available in the game, Muarim is much easier to use than Mordecai due to his starting level and nice base stats. He's very powerful when you first get him. Strong and fast, he'll be able to tear through most enemies rather easily. On my first playthrough, I left the Demi Band on him and even with the decreased stats, he still had no trouble tearing through groups of enemies. In the later stages of the game, he's much more useful than Mordecai. He won't be as strong as Mordecai, but he's got better Speed and will double-attack much more often. His Defense tends to lag as well, but he evades better, so it's not as much of a problem. He joins at a perfect time, being useful immediately when he joins and remaining decently powerful all the way through the game. He comes without any base Skills, so you're free to do whatever with him. Smite is good for him. If you want to boost his attack strength, Adept and Resolve will give him a good boost in at half HP. Guard is a good choice for him as well. Roar is a pitiful Master Skill, but if you've got nothing better to do with an Occult Scroll, Roar would be a decent fit for Muarim. Muarim generally ends up with more Skill and Speed and less Strength than Mordecai. In the later Chapters, Muarim's superior Speed makes him much more useful than Mordecai for me. In my opinion, the Cats outclass the Tigers in almost every way, so if I want to use a Beast Laguz, I'll usually opt to use Lethe or Ranulf rather than Muarim or Mordecai. The Tigers are definitely worth using if you want to, though. ~Rating~ 8 Good Strength, Speed and Defense combination. ::::::::Devdan:::::::: [Dvdn0] Devdan is a simple man who doesn't really want to fight. He was forced into fighting for a Begnion Duke, but betrayed him because he refused to fight children. Halberdier Attribute: Fire Build: 12 Move: 7 ~Equipment~ Heavy Spear Weapon Proficiency - Lance: B ~Skills~ Serenity - 5 Skill Points - 20/25 Master Skill: Luna ~Growth Rates~ HP: 75% Speed: 35% Strength: 60% Defense: 45% Magic: 30% Resistance: 45% Skill: 40% Luck: 40% ~Base Stats~ Level: 4 HP: 36 Speed: 13 Strength: 14 Defense: 11 Magic: 7 Resistance: 10 Skill: 15 Luck: 16 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 26 Strength: 25 Defense: 28 Magic: 20 Resistance: 25 Skill: 28 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 16. He starts as an enemy unit in the northwest area of the mansion. Talk to him with Soren or Sothe. Sui89 confirms that Rolf, Mist and Tormod can also talk with Devdan. ~Supports~ Nephenee Tormod Largo ~My take~ The second Halberdier available in the game, Devdan is the only alternative to Nephenee. In general, Devdan starts out stronger but ends up weaker than Nephenee. His base stats are rather poor for his level, but for the point in the game you're at, Devdan can start contributing to battles immediately. He should be one of the only promoted characters in your army when he joins. He'll be a very good front line character for a few chapters thanks to his even stats. Devdan is a very well-rounded character. None of his stats are very impressive. He gets pretty good Strength and Skill, as well as very good Resistance for a non-magic unit. He makes a very good candidate to wield the Flame Lance you get in Chapter 23 with his decent Magic. His Defense is lacking, but his Luck makes up for that slightly. He'll have a hard time staying on the front lines in the later chapters. His base Skill, Serenity, is quite worthless, but there isn't much reason to delete it, as Devdan really doesn't have a need to equip Skills worth 5 or 15 points. Generally, 2 10-point Skills such as Wrath and Adept will suit him well. Luna is probably his best bet, but there are better characters out there than Devdan to give one of your Occult scrolls. If you've got one left over, I'd suggest giving it to Devdan. A lot of people will tell you that Devdan is a bad character. That's not true, Devdan is a decent character. He just doesn't excel in anything. His mediocre Defense and Speed hinder him a bit, but he's got nice Strength, and he'll make better use of the Magical weapon than most other units. He certainly can't hold a candle to Nephenee, matching her in only Luck, Resistance and Magic. If you use Devdan, don't expect him to max anything, and use him selectively. He's easily overwhelmed in later chapters by high Strength and Defense enemies. ~Rating~ 6 Decent Strength and Magic. Hurt by poor Speed and mediocre Defense. Hard for him to keep up in later chapters. ::::::::Tanith:::::::: [Tnth0] A Commander of the Pegasus Knights of Begnion. The Apostle sends her to aid Ike in the fight against Daein. Falcon Knight Attribute: Earth Build: 8 Move: 9 ~Equipment~ Sonic Sword Short Spear Weapon Proficiency - Sword: A, Lance: B ~Skills~ Reinforce - 15 Skill Points - 5/20 Master Skill: Stun ~Growth Rates~ HP: 60% Speed: 40% Strength: 40% Defense: 25% Magic: 35% Resistance: 30% Skill: 70% Luck: 30% ~Base Stats~ Level: 10 HP: 32 Speed: 24 Strength: 16 Defense: 15 Magic: 10 Resistance: 13 Skill: 18 Luck: 18 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 28 Strength: 23 Defense: 24 Magic: 20 Resistance: 27 Skill: 26 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 18. She joins automatically at the start of Chapter 18. ~Supports~ Oscar Marcia Reyson ~My take~ Tanith is easily usable from the moment she joins. She's a very good alternative to Marcia. If you've been using Marcia, her stats should probably look a lot similar to Tanith's, only she'll be on a lower level than Tanith. As soon as she joins, feel free to use her however you want. She can stay on the front line destroying enemies and will almost never get hit due to her great evade. She's one of the best dodgers in the game with great Speed and Luck. Her low base Strength sometimes screws her and she has a tough time doing damage in the later chapters, but she'll always double-attack. She has good Magic and Resistance as well. Her Defense lags behind, but with her evade, it won't matter too much. What really makes her a great unit is her base Skill. Reinforce is a wonderful Skill that calls three backup Pegasus Knights as yellow Partner Units. She's the only one who can ever use this Skill, and it takes 15 points to keep on her. If you want to put another Skill on her, go with Miracle or Parity. Miracle will activate pretty often with her thanks to her great Luck, and Parity is okay for her, since she doesn't have any battle Skills. If you're supporting her with someone, I'd advise against Parity. In the end, her stats should come up just short of Marcia's, but I still much prefer Tanith, Tanith is much more useful overall because of Reinforce and excellent evade. She almost never gets hit, and if you give her the Full Guard not even archers will hurt her much. She has a bit of trouble damaging the higher-Defense units later in the game, and her HP is rather low. Whether or not you want to use her depends on how much value you place on her awesome evade and the Reinforce Skill. I find her to be one of the best units in the game because of those two abilities. ~Rating~ 9 Excellent dodger with decent Strength and Magic. Reinforce is very helpful. ::::::::Reyson:::::::: [Resn0] One of the only Herons left in existance. Reyson is the Prince of the Heron Clan, and lives on Phoenicis with King Tibarn. He holds deep anger and hatred for humans for what they've done in the past. Bird Tribe --> Heron Attribute: Fire Build: 8 Move: 5 ~Equipment~ Elixir Weapon Proficiency - None ~Skills~ Canto - 20, Blessing - 20 Skill Points - 0/40 Master Skill: Blessing ~Growth Rates~ HP: 65% Speed: 50% Strength: 5% Defense: 15% Magic: 40% Resistance: 50% Skill: 50% Luck: 60% ~Base Stats~ Level: 3 HP: 22 Speed: 14 Strength: 1 Defense: 2 Magic: 10 Resistance: 20 Skill: 11 Luck: 15 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 26 Strength: 10 Defense: 15 Magic: 20 Resistance: 35 Skill: 17 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 18. I'm still not quite sure of what the requirement to get Reyson is. As long as you read the Info section at your base, you should be fine. He'll offer to join you before Chapter 18 starts, along with Ulki and Janaff. If you'd like to help me with this, see the Contact section. I'd much appreciate it. ~Supports~ Ike Tormod Tanith ~My take~ If you've played other Fire Emblem games, you'll be familiar with the "Dancer" class that allows one character to move again. Reyson fits that role in this game, only he's much, much better than the Dancers from the other American- released Fire Emblems. In human form, Reyson acts as the Dancers in the previous two games. He'll allow one person to move again. However, when he transforms into his Heron form, you have one of the most useful characters in the game on your hands. In Heron form, he can make every character in an adjacent space move again. That means up to 4 characters can get an extra move on the same turn. In addition, he heals characters in adjacent spaces at the beginning of each turn, in both human and Heron form. Since his Skill set is what gives him his abilities, you wouldn't want to delete them. You couldn't do it anyway, but that also means no other Skills for Reyson. Not a loss there, since he can't fight anyway. For those of you that thought Ninian and Tethys were useful, Reyson multiplies that usefulness by about five. As far as his stats.... they don't really matter much since if you've got any brains, you'll be keeping him away from the front lines. He's got loads of Speed and Luck, so if he gets attacked, he's got good evade. Don't let him get hit too much, because his Defense sucks and he has almost no HP. He'll go down real quick if you get him into trouble. He's got very good Resistance, so magic isn't a threat to him. In fact, he's quite useful as long-range magic bait. He's an excellent addition to your main team and his usefulness has almost no limit. ~Rating~ 10 Unparalleled in usefulness. Great healer and utility character. ::::::::Ulki:::::::: [Ulki0] One of Tibarn's right-hand men. Ulki is Tibarn's ears. He has the ability to hear things from a great distance away. He's quiet and reserved, and rarely speaks unless spoken to. He joins with Reyson at the start of Chapter 18. ~Supports~ Boyd Rhys Mordecai ~My take~ Of the two Hawks you get, Ulki is the stronger and sturdier one. Hawks are useful to have around from time to time because of their flying ability. Great base stats make both of the Hawks immediately useful. Ulki will be dealing pretty good damage when he comes in, but he'll have trouble double- attacking some high-speed units. Enemies will have a tough time dealing good damage on him in Hawk form because of his good Defense. Watch out for archers or they'll tear Ulki up. His inherent Skill helps him evade most attacks. With good Strength and Defense, he's a good physical unit. Vigilance makes up for his bad Luck, but he does sometimes have trouble double-attacking. He comes at a perfect time in the game where he can jump right into the action without stealing experience. His only real weakness is his Speed is a bit low. Ulki comes with Vigilance, a free Skill that doesn't take any points to equip. That's really all he needs, but if you really want him to have something else, Adept will help him attack more and Nihil will nullify enemy Skills, making him a great boss killer. Overall, Ulki is an awesome unit. Able to deal great damage, take some in return. Vigilance turns him into a great dodger as well, so the only threat to him is archers. His only real weakness is his merely decent Speed. I prefer him to Janaff, but both are very good units. It's very hard for Ulki to go down in Hawk form. There is a drawback to using him, though. He transforms quite a bit later than Janaff, so it'll take a few turns to get him into the action. ~Rating~ 8 Good HP and Strength, as well as good evade. Mediocre Speed hurts him a lot. ::::::::Janaff:::::::: [Jnaf0] Janaff is one of Tibarn's right-hand men. He's the eyes of the Hawk King. He has the ability to see far away, even through fog. He's extremely loyal to Tibarn holds the Ravens in particular contempt. He joins with Reyson at the start of Chapter 18. ~Supports~ Oscar Shinon Lucia ~My take~ While Ulki is stronger and sturdier, Janaff is much faster. He's tough to hit when he's in the middle of things. As soon as he joins he can contribute greatly to your army. He transforms quickly, which enables him to jump right in and blow through enemies. He'll double-attack everything and doesn't need more than one battle to take care of most enemies. His Defense is decent enough, so he won't sustain a lot of damage early on. Later, though, his Defense becomes a notable weakness. His wonderful Speed and Luck help to make up for that, but in the later chapters it'll be tough for him to rely on dodging. He'll still double-attack everything, and he's got pretty good Strength, so there's no need to worry about him in the offense department. Like Ulki, Janaff comes with a Skill that doesn't take up any points. Insight almost ensures that he'll hit every time he strikes, but it doesn't make up for any of his weaknesses like Ulki's Vigilance does. Janaff doesn't need anything more than he's already got, so just leave him be. If you've got an extra Occult scroll, it wouldn't hurt to give him one. Cancel isn't too great of a Skill, but it'll help him a bit. Also, Gamble might work on him thanks to his high Hit, if it's still sitting around. Janaff is a great offensive unit, but isn't quite as useful all-around as Ulki is. He transforms early and will get lots of double-attacks, so he's a good unit to make quick charges with. He's more fragile than Ulki is, but he dodges well, so it isn't much of a problem. Archers will do him a lot of harm, so keep him away from them. ~Rating~ 7.5 Great Skill and Speed, decent Strength. Poor Defense makes him far too fragile. ::::::::Calill:::::::: [Clil0] "You there, grunt person! Point me to your general, I wish to join this army. I'm a first-class Mage!" See the Info section about her before Chapter 20 to have the opportunity to recruit her. ~Supports~ Nephenee Tormod Geoffrey ~My take~ The self-proclaimed first-class mage is actually only second-class. That being all of her weapon proficiency ratings start at B, giving her great variety. Great base stats make her a wonderful unit as soon as she joins. Good Magic, Speed and Luck make her a very reliable unit, as she'll deal good damage, do a good deal of double-attacking and be a decent dodger as well. Her Defense is decent, but she's still pretty fragile on the front lines. Think of her as a more useful version of Ilyana. They have similar Magic, Skill and Luck, but Calill has better Speed and Defense. Her Resistance is kind've low for a mage, but it's not anything to worry about. She has a base Strength of 8, which enables her to wield most of the heavy tomes in the game without any trouble. And that should grow a couple of points by the time she reaches level 20, so she'll be a decent fighter with Knives, but nothing special. Nihil is a decent Skill for her. Still, you might want to delete it for Skills that will make her more intimidating, like Adept and Wrath. Flare wouldn't be too bad for her, but there are better uses for your Occult scrolls. If you've got one to spare, go ahead and give it to her. There are a lot of uses for Calill. She can use all three magic types rather easily, which gives her a lot of variety. She's stuck using Knives, which hurt her usefulness a bit, but she'll be so busy killing things that it's not that big of a loss. She tends to evade more than any of the other Sages you get, and she's got good Defense for when she does get hit. Her good Magic and Speed make her quite a force. She's my second-favorite mage to use, losing to Soren by just a hair. ~Rating~ 8.5 Good all-around stats. B rank in all Magic types helps immensely. ::::::::Tauroneo:::::::: [Trno0] A soldier of Daein. He disagrees with what his country is doing. He's an enemy soldier to the south of the map in Chapter 21. Ike can recruit him, and possibly more people can as well. Any information on who else can will be appreciated. See the Contact section if you'd like to help me out. ~Supports~ Rolf Largo ~My take~ The final General available for your army, Tauroneo is more of a well-rounded fighter than the other two. He comes at a high level with decent base stats. If you're using one (or both) of the other Generals, they'll probably be a lot better than Tauroneo, and at a lower level as well. Tauroneo is still a decent unit, though, with good base Strength and Defense. He's pretty quick for a General, but not quick enough to do much double-attacking. He's by no means a weakling, but he's got quite poor Strength and Defense for a General. Taking into consideration that his Speed is rather lacking, he makes up for a rather poor General. I think he'd have made a better Halberdier than a General, but alas. What redeems Tauroneo is his base Skill, Resolve. It's a rare and very good Skill, and it suits him very well. I would advise against deleting it under any circumstances. Add Adept or Wrath to him and he'll be deadly at half HP. Overall, both Gatrie and Brom should have higher stats then Tauroneo. He's got the best Resistance, though, and with Resolve it almost makes up for his lower overall stats. Though Resolve is certainly an awesome Skill, I don't find it good enough to make up for Tauroneo's obvious lack in stats. A plus for him is he's generally RNG-proof, so if you want a General and the others turned out poorly, Tauroneo will easily make up for it. ~Rating~ 6 Poor overall stats. Good Resistance helps, as well as Resolve, but it isn't enough to make up for the fact he's a fair bit behind in stats. ::::::::Ranulf:::::::: [Rnlf0] Ranulf is the General of the Gallian army, he shares the ideal that Beorc and Laguz can live together peacefully. He's witty and sometimes comes off as sarcastic. He'll join automatically at the start of Chapter 23. ~Supports~ Ike Lethe Mordecai ~My take~ The final Beast Laguz, Ranulf also tends to be the best. He has great base stats, and joins at a point in the game where a dependable Beast Laguz is quite useful. He has great Strength, Skill, Speed and Defense, so he is easily a good unit when he joins. He also doesn't take very long to transform, which is a good thing. He'll keep up with all of your best units rather well, and end up with very good Strength, Speed and Defense. He's a superb offensive unit. He won't have any trouble double-attacking, and his good Strength allows him to take down most units in one battle. He's a great dodger as well, even in human form he'll dodge pretty well. On some missions, I'd put Ranulf on the front line before he transforms and just watched all of the units come in and miss him to get him to transform more quickly. He doesn't start with any Skills and generally doesn't need any. If you absolutely must give him a Skill, Resolve will make him roving death when he falls below half HP. Maybe Nihil, as that'll make him a good boss killer. Of all the main Laguz in the game, Ranulf is my favorite to use. He comes at a point where a good Beast Laguz is really helpful, and most of the enemies are promoted so he won't steal much experience. His Resistance is poor. so he's not completely invincible. He'll generally evade even magic a lot of the time, so it's not even too much of a weakness. Watch out for Fire magic, though. If you want a Beast Laguz for your final team, Ranulf is the way to go. Though you can't go wrong with either Cat, so go with either one. ~Rating~ 9.5 Excellent all-around stats. Bad Resistance keeps him from a ten rating. ::::::::Haar:::::::: [Haar0] Haar commands a unit of the Daein Wyvern Riders. He's more than a little laid back, even falling asleep in the middle of battle. He will appear as an enemy a few turns into Chapter 23 at the east of the map. Talk to him with Jill to recruit him. ~Supports~ Jill Makalov ~My take~ The final Wyvern Rider you get is Haar, and he tends to kick much ass. His base stats are very good, and he is very useful as soon as he joins. His awesome base Strength and Defense make him a great physical presence from the moment he joins. He's also got good Speed and Skill, allowing him to double-attack pretty often. He can take most enemies in one battle. In the later chapters, his Speed tends to lag slightly, but he's so strong it doesn't hurt him too much. It takes a lot to take Haar down on the front lines. He'll plow through most enemies easily enough. Watch out for his Resistance, though, as it makes him an easy target for mages. Haar comes with Guard, which is a good Skill for him. In conjunction with Vantage, he's quite formidable. Adept would help him attack more, and with his Strength it will yield powerful results. Being a mounted unit, Savior is also a good choice for Haar, especially since he'll be on the front lines often. For those of you familiar with FE7, the first one released in America, think of Haar as a suped-up Vaida. Vaida was a flying tank with relatively poor Speed but great Strength. Haar is a lot like that, only his Speed is pretty decent, and he has great Skill. He usually outclasses Jill, but Jill will almost always be faster. I prefer Haar because of his Defense. Enemy units have a hard time doing damage to Haar, where Jill needs to depend a bit more on dodging. He's also RNG-proof, so he'll be good every time you want to use him. ~Rating~ 9 Superb HP, Strength and Defense, good Skill and Speed as well. ::::::::Bastian:::::::: [Bstn0] One of Princess Elincia's retainers. This eloquent and cheerful man is ecstatic that he's serving his Princess. He quite literally can't keep his cheer from flooding out of his incredibly long-winded speeches. Sage Attribute: Wind Build: 10 Move: 6 ~Equipment~ Elwind Stiletto Weapon Proficiency - Wind: A, Fire: B, Thunder: C ~Skills~ Corrosion - 10 Skill Points - 15/25 Master Skill: Flare ~Growth Rates~ HP: 55% Speed: 55% Strength: 40% Defense: 35% Magic: 65% Resistance: 50% Skill: 65% Luck: 30% ~Base Stats~ Level: 13 HP: 35 Speed: 16 Strength: 12 Defense: 12 Magic: 19 Resistance: 20 Skill: 21 Luck: 15 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 28 Strength: 15 Defense: 20 Magic: 30 Resistance: 28 Skill: 28 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 24. He will automatically join during Chapter 24. ~Supports~ Volke Makalov Lucia ~My take~ The final Sage available for you, it's Bastian! Sadly, he also tends to be the least useful of the bunch, and with all of the good Sages in this game, poor Bastian easily gets lost in the shuffle. When he joins, you probably already have a primary Sage that has better stats than Bastian. Still, he's got decent base stats, with good Magic and Skill. If you decide to use him, he can contribute in battle. He'll have a lot of trouble double-attacking, but his Strength is pretty good for a Sage, so he makes for a good mage killer. He has decent Magic, but it's not as good as your other Magic-users. He tends to get the best Defense of all the Sages in your party, but that point is lost in that his Speed is rather poor. It probably won't even match Ilyana's, and her Speed is one of her weakest points. He can't use staves, so he can't even fill a utility role very well. His Luck is mediocre, so it'll hurt his evade, and with his already mediocre Speed, he'll have trouble double-attacking. Looking to his Skill list for salvation, where we hope to find a shred of usefulness hiding behind his inferior stats. And there, we find a big, black, gaping hole: Corrosion. Pound for pound, the worst Skill in the game. Corrosion is completely useless and does more harm than good. I'd replace it with Adept and Guard, or maybe Nihil. You could always give him Flare to make up for his lack of Speed, but there are far better candidates for those Occult scrolls. Now, I don't want to make Bastian sound completely useless, which I no doubt have, but the other four Sages just outclass him badly. Pound for pound, Bastian is a decent unit if you want to use him. His Speed screws him over quite terribly, but he can take a few more hits than the other Sages. And he'll need to because he'll probably encounter a good deal of double-attacks. ~Rating~ 6 Mediocre stats all-around. Bad Speed screws him over. ::::::::Lucia:::::::: [Lcia0] Geoffrey's sister. Lucia is a rather serious retainer to Princess Elincia. She's a by-the-book kind of person and can sometimes come off as superior. She will join automatically during Chapter 24. ~Supports~ Ilyana Janaff Bastian ~My take~ Ah, the final Swordmaster of the game. If you played FE7, Lucia will probably remind you a fair bit of Karla, a Swordmaster that comes very late, and has quite awful base stats. There is one big difference between Karla and Lucia, though: Karla never got better, and Lucia does. Although she is pretty weak when she first joins, Lucia has the potential to become one of your strongest units. Even early, she'll be able to evade pretty well, but she'll have a lot of trouble causing significant damage to enemy units. Her growth rates are obscene. She'll come close to maxing Strength, Skill and Speed, making her pretty dangerous. She also has great Luck, meaning she'll have excellent evade. Even in the final chapters, she'll evade almost every blow. She has no problems double-attacking and has the Strength to deal decent damage. Parity is almost worthless. If you're gonna use her, put some good Skills on her. You could come right out and teach her Astra if you've got a spare Occult scroll. I find combinations of other Skills a bit better, though. Vantage is a great Skill for Lucia, and combined with Guard or Wrath she's gonna be tough for enemies to deal with. If you've still got that Miracle scroll that you obtained forever ago, she can make very good use of that. Gamble would also work, as with all Swordmasters. Lucia is a safe version of Mia. They're quite alike when it comes down to it, but I like Lucia better. Neither are quite in Stefan or Zihark's league, but both very good units on their own. Lucia is a dodging machine that can pile on good amounts of damage. She starts off a little weaker than your units, but grows to become a very strong unit on her own. ~Rating~ 7.5 Excellent evade, decent Strength and Defense as well. Loses a point for poor base stats. ::::::::Geoffrey:::::::: [Gfry0] Elincia's most loyal retainer, there's nothing he wouldn't do for his Kingdom. He's quite serious, like his sister, Lucia. Paladin Attribute: Fire Build: 11 Move: 9 ~Equipment~ Brave Lance Steel Bow Vulnerary Weapon Proficiency - Lance: A, Bow: C ~Skills~ Paragon - 15 Skill Points - 5/20 Master Skill: Sol ~Growth Rates~ HP: 65% Speed: 55% Strength: 50% Defense: 45% Magic: 25% Resistance: 45% Skill: 55% Luck: 20% ~Base Stats~ Level: 11 HP: 43 Speed: 19 Strength: 18 Defense: 21 Magic: 9 Resistance: 9 Skill: 17 Luck: 12 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 27 Strength: 26 Defense: 27 Magic: 20 Resistance: 25 Skill: 26 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 25. He'll join at the start of Chapter 25, provided he survived Chapter 24. ~Supports~ Calill Elincia ~My take~ The last Paladin available in the game, and just look at those base stats. 21 base Defense is definitely a good thing. Geoffrey will definitely be a big help from the moment he joins. His awesome base Speed and Defense make him quite a force. He'll have a bit of trouble double-attacking when he joins, but that shouldn't last for long. He's got all-around good stats. But what really makes him a force is his almost General-like Defense. He has good Strength, Skill and Speed, and decent Magic and Resistance. He won't be doing much dodging, but with his Defense, it doesn't even matter much. What else is he's a threat at both long and short range attacking, with his Lances and Bows. Give him a Killer Bow and watch him shred through people. He comes with Paragon, which will help him max out very quickly. He'll grow incredibly fast. You don't want him to max too quickly, though, so I'd recommend deleting it after he gets a few levels. He can make use of so many Skills it isn't even funny. Adept and Wrath is a good combination. You could also go with Nihil and Provoke, since his Defense is so good he'll be able to thin out a lot of enemies with Provoke. Savior is always good for a mounted unit. I wouldn't suggest giving him Sol, but if you've got an extra Occult scroll around, it's better than nothing. It should activate often enough for him to gain back any HP he might have lost. Geoffrey grows like a wildfire. He starts as a dangerous threat, but then grows extremely quickly and becomes a major destructive force that is hard to get rid of and ends up destroying anything in his path. His only bad stat is his Luck, and with the Defense he has, Luck doesn't even matter. He's extremely easy to use and grows to become very powerful. Usually I'm a fan of the high-Speed units that never get hit, but Geoffrey is definitely a favorite of mine to use. He can just plunder the front lines, absorbing damage while he easily destroys enemies in his path. The problem is, with five other Paladins in this game, sometimes there just isn't room for Geoffrey by the time you get him. He'll help you a lot if you use him. ~Rating~ 9.5 Short range, long range, excellent all-around. Great Defense and Strength. Poor Resistance keeps him from a ten rating. ::::::::Largo:::::::: [Lrgo0] "Hey, small fry, point me to your General! I'm joining this army! I'm a world-class Berserker! Watch in awe as I bend this Lance!" From out of nowhere, Largo appears and asks to join Ike's Army. He has some connection to Calill, if you couldn't tell by their almost exact act they put on to Ike. Berserker Attribute: Wind Build: 15 Move: 7 ~Equipment~ Silver Axe Short Axe Weapon Proficiency - Axe: A ~Skills~ None Skill Points - 25/25 Master Skill: Colossus ~Growth Rates~ HP: 80% Speed: 45% Strength: 70% Defense: 25% Magic: 5% Resistance: 20% Skill: 45% Luck: 30% ~Base Stats~ Level: 7 HP: 52 Speed: 20 Strength: 21 Defense: 10 Magic: 4 Resistance: 3 Skill: 21 Luck: 12 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 28 Strength: 30 Defense: 26 Magic: 20 Resistance: 20 Skill: 24 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 25. See the Info section about him at your base before Chapter 25 for an opportunity to recruit him. ~Supports~ Mia Muarim Devdan Tauroneo ~My take~ The only Berserker in the game, and he comes very late. I always liked Warriors better, though, but 'Zerks are handy to have around with their innate critical rate. Largo is a frightening sight to behold. On one hand, you have 52 base HP, 21 base Strength and Skill and 20 base Speed. A frightening offensive powerhouse. On the other hand, you have 10 base Defense and 3(!) base Resistance. Just the idea him getting hit is pretty frightening as well! Largo is 100% pure offensive might. He has terribly poor Defense and the worst Resistance in the game, and he lacks the dodging ability to make up for it. When he's on the front lines, he'll have no problem destroying even high- Defense units. But he'll also need a lot of looking after himself. Once he starts getting hit, he's a goner, and enemy Myrmidons and Swordmasters will just tear him apart. Vantage is a great Skill for Largo, as it will allow him to attack first in every battle, and with his Strength combined with his Critical bonus, there's a decent chance he'll kill the enemy before he is hit, which is always a good thing for fragile Largo. Wrath is another good Skill for him, as he'll be below half HP often, and with his Critical bonus he'll do a lot of criticals with it. Guard also helps him a bunch, as it'll cancel enemy counter attacks, helping Largo to suffer less hits. Go with a combination of those three Skills and they'll help make up for Largo's weaknesses. Without a doubt, Largo is one of the most offensively intimidating units in the game, but he just has too many weaknesses to take advantage of that most of the time. With certain Skills, it helps make up for it, but he's still fragile even with them. Rhys will have an easier time staying alive than Largo on the front lines. If you keep an eye on him and be selective in your use of him, Largo will be a helpful injection of raw power to your army, just make damn sure you're careful with him or he'll get defeated. ~Rating~ 6.5 All offense. All in all, the most fragile unit in the game. Can't handle front line combat too well. ::::::::Elincia:::::::: [Elnc0] The Princess of Crimea, heir to the Kingdom. She's one of the most important characters in the game. I can't reveal much else without spoiling some of the story. She's shy even though she doesn't like to show it. Princess Crimea Attribute: Heaven Build: 6 Move: 9 ~Equipment~ Amiti Mend Weapon Proficiency - Sword: D, Staff: A ~Skills~ Renewal - 15 Skill Points - 5/20 Master Skill: Skill ~Growth Rates~ HP: 60% Speed: 40% Strength: 30% Defense: 25% Magic: 80% Resistance: 35% Skill: 45% Luck: 60% ~Base Stats~ Level: 1 HP: 27 Speed: 18 Strength: 9 Defense: 11 Magic: 12 Resistance: 15 Skill: 16 Luck: 15 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 60 Speed: 28 Strength: 20 Defense: 24 Magic: 25 Resistance: 27 Skill: 26 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 26. She joins automatically at the start of Chapter 26. ~Supports~ Ike Geoffrey ~My take~ The Princess finally takes arms as an acting Pegasus Knight in Chapter 26 after travelling around with you the whole game. Too bad it's way too late for those crappy base stats to help you any. If you're going to use Elincia, make sure you have a crapload of bonus experience saved up for when she joins, because she starts feeble, at level 1, and almost useless. She'll go down in a big hurry if enemies get to her, and she's so weak that she's worthless in battle. She is of a little use with her ability to heal and then move after she acts, which will let her heal while staying away from the action. She's got an infinite-durability weapon that acts as a Brave Sword, so she has the power to make a decent fighter even with her mediocre Strength. Her main use is healing. At higher levels, she can be used as a combat healer that can traverse the front lines and still defend herself with her good evade and decent Strength. The trick is getting her to that higher level. Don't bother with extra Skills. It isn't worth removing Renewal, and Miracle is the only 5 point Skill that would do her any good, and chances are low that you still have that lying around when she joins. If you do, though, by all means give it to her. The best way to use her is if you inject her with 10-15 levels worth of bonus experience when she joins, but on the harder difficulty modes, it's hard to accumulate so much without giving some to other units. If you give her some levels when she joins, she'll be an all-around good unit. She's got amazing dodging ability, and with Amiti can deal good enough damage to be a help on the front lines. Renewal will help her stay alive if she ever gets hit, but you can't depend on that too much. Flying healers are a first for the American Fire Emblems, and that's what Elincia's strength is. She can defend herself and contribute to the fighting, but her main use is healing front line units. ~Rating~ 7.5 Great all-around stats. Loses points for coming so late and under-leveled. ::::::::Ena:::::::: [Ena00] One of Goldoa's Dragons, she is a tactician for Daein's army. She has some ulterior motives, but no one even suspects her. She possesses quite impressive tactical knowledge. Dragon Tribe --> Red Dragon Attribute: Build: 6 Move: 5 ~Equipment~ None Weapon Proficiency - None ~Skills~ Renewal - 15, Miracle - 5, Boon - 20 Skill Points - 0/40 Master Skill: Boon ~Growth Rates~ HP: 145% Speed: 60% Strength: 35% Defense: 40% Magic: 5% Resistance: 30% Skill: 50% Luck: 40% ~Base Stats~ Level: 10 HP: 52 Speed: 15 Strength: 20 Defense: 23 Magic: 9 Resistance: 21 Skill: 17 Luck: 14 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 75 Speed: 31 Strength: 30 Defense: 36 Magic: 20 Resistance: 30 Skill: 31 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 28. She'll join automatically at the start of Chapter 28, provided you escaped without defeating the Black Knight in Chapter 27. ~Supports~ None ~My take~ One of the potential Dragons available in the game. You can only get one or the other, and Ena is quite the inferior of the two. Her low Speed keeps her from double-attacking and she can get into trouble with that, but she's got good Defense. She makes for a decent tank but won't be doing much damage thanks to her mediocre Speed. Boon isn't very useful at this stage in the game, and would have helped a lot more earlier in the game, but it's there so you may as well take advantage of it if you need to. Renewal and Miracle will help her stay alive on the front lines as she gets constantly double-attacked. She's the penalty for not winning the fight with the Black Knight in Chapter 27. You get a nice reward if you defeat him, and we'll get into that next. ~Rating~ 6 Poor Speed destroys offensive potential. Under-leveled with no chance to grow. ::::::::Nasir:::::::: [Nasr0] A Dragon outcast of Goldoa. He's spent the years as a merchant and ferryman, taking travelers from Crimea to Begnion. Ike and his army use his ship to get to Begnion, and he accompanies them to Daein. Dragon Tribe --> White Dragon Attribute: Light Build: 12 Move: 5 ~Equipment~ None Weapon Proficiency - None ~Skills~ Nihil - 15, Boon - 20 Skill Points - 5/40 Master Skill: Boon ~Growth Rates~ HP: 150% Speed: 45% Strength: 50% Defense: 60% Magic: 10% Resistance: 25% Skill: 55% Luck: 35% ~Base Stats~ Level: 18 HP: 56 Speed: 22 Strength: 20 Defense: 24 Magic: 11 Resistance: 27 Skill: 23 Luck: 17 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 80 Speed: 32 Strength: 30 Defense: 35 Magic: 25 Resistance: 35 Skill: 30 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 28. He'll join automatically at the start of Chapter 28, provided that you defeated the Black Knight in Chapter 27. ~Supports~ None ~My take~ The stronger of the two Dragons in the game, Nasir is by far and away the one you want to get. Unfortunately, you have to win a painfully rigged match in order to recruit him. He easily bests Ena in pretty much every stat, actually having the Speed to double-attack a lot of enemies along with better Defense. He can stick to the front lines and act as a wall for your army. The only threat to him is other Dragons, and they aren't too much of a threat. He comes with Nihil, which is a great Skill for this point in the game, A lot of regular Joe enemies will have some Skills, and Nasir is a great candidate to take them down. Boon is the same as with Ena, so meh. Nasir can survive better on the front lines as well as do much, much more damage than Ena. It really is a pity he's so hard to get, and it basically rides on luck rather than actual skill to win that battle. If you do, Nasir is your reward, and quite a reward he is. ~Rating~ 9 Extremely powerful all-around. Poor movement loses him his ten rating. ::::::::Tibarn:::::::: [Tibn0] King of Phoenicis. Tibarn is an honorable King and cares for his subjects. He and his clan despise Begnion, and actively attacks Begnion vessels that travel the waters near Phoenicis. He looks after Prince Reyson. Bird Tribe --> Hawk Attribute: Heaven Build: 14 Move: 6 ~Equipment~ Laguz Band Elixir Weapon Proficiency - None ~Skills~ Savior - 10, Cancel - 20 Skill Points - 10/40 Master Skill: Cancel ~Growth Rates~ HP: 145% Speed: 65% Strength: 70% Defense: 60% Magic: 5% Resistance: 25% Skill: 70% Luck: 50% ~Base Stats~ Level: 18 HP: 63 Speed: 24 Strength: 30 Defense: 26 Magic: 11 Resistance: 19 Skill: 31 Luck: 24 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 75 Speed: 36 Strength: 33 Defense: 32 Magic: 20 Resistance: 29 Skill: 35 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 29. Choose him during Chapter 29. ~Supports~ None ~My take~ The final three characters are only available for part of the final Chapter, and you can only choose one. Tibarn is your first choice, and a great choice he makes. He's generally the most powerful unit available to you in the game, and can do pretty much any job without any problem. Not much else to say about Tibarn. He'll kick everyone's ass and help take down the final boss. Marvel in his power. ~Rating~ 10 Godly powerful. ::::::::Naesala:::::::: [Nsla0] Naesala is the scheming and backstabbing King of Kilvas. He allies himself not with the Laguz, but with whoever pays him the most Gold. He desires to expand Kilvas and would do anything to do so. He is a friend of Reyson, but that friendship has grown stale over the years because of Naesala allying himself with the humans. Bird Tribe --> Raven Attribute: Dark Build: 11 Move: 6 ~Equipment~ Laguz Band Elixir Coin Weapon Proficiency - None ~Skills~ Vantage - 10, Vortex - 20 Skill Points - 10/40 Master Skill: Vortex ~Growth Rates~ HP: 135% Speed: 75% Strength: 60% Defense: 55% Magic: 40% Resistance: 35% Skill: 70% Luck: 20% ~Base Stats~ Level: 17 HP: 57 Speed: 31 Strength: 25 Defense: 21 Magic: 15 Resistance: 16 Skill: 26 Luck: 19 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 70 Speed: 37 Strength: 29 Defense: 27 Magic: 24 Resistance: 32 Skill: 34 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 29. Choose him in Chapter 29. ~Supports~ None ~My take~ Your second choice in the final Chapter, Naesala. I love using him, because he's not super strong like the other two, but rather relies on his Speed. Naesala almost never gets hit, even the final boss has trouble hitting him. He's also the only Laguz in the game with a ranged attack, which comes in pretty handy sometimes. I like variety in my units, and Naesala definitely has more of that than the other two, so he's my favorite to use even if he isn't as strong as Tibarn. After all, no one is as strong as Tibarn. ~Rating~ 10 Impossible to hit. Great all-around stats. ::::::::Giffca:::::::: [Gfca0] Giffca is the beast King's shadow. He follows Caineghis everywhere unless ordered to do something else. Beast Tribe --> Lion Attribute: Dark Build: 17 Move: 7 ~Equipment~ Laguz Band Elixir Weapon Proficiency - None ~Skills~ Roar - 20 Skill Points - 5/25 Master Skill: Roar ~Growth Rates~ HP: 160% Speed: 60% Strength: 75% Defense: 50% Magic: 5% Resistance: 30% Skill: 70% Luck: 40% ~Base Stats~ Level: 20 HP: 68 Speed: 25 Strength: 32 Defense: 25 Magic: 10 Resistance: 16 Skill: 28 Luck: 22 ~Stat Caps~ HP: 80 Speed: 33 Strength: 32 Defense: 35 Magic: 20 Resistance: 37 Skill: 35 Luck: 40 Recruit in Chapter 29. Choose him in Chapter 29. ~Supports~ None ~My take~ The only Lion in the game, Giffca is the third of the units you can choose between in the final Chapter. He's a show in raw power, just look at that 40 Strength when he's transformed! He'll easily blow through enemies without much trouble, and he can do a bunch of damage to the final boss. All three of the final units you can choose from are powerful, so pick whoever you want. I like all three, so I try to alternate on each playhthrough, but I tend to use Naesala the most. I just love watching people miss him. ~Rating~ 10 Extremely strong and fast. Great all-around stats. ****************************************************************************** III. Stat Comparisons ****************************************************************************** In this section, I'll expand from the information given in the character section of the guide. Below, I will seperate the characters by their class, in order to compare their stats to one another. This section should give you a clearer idea of which characters of each class excel in which stats. It should help you to decide which characters of each class you'd want to use, depending on what stats you value in a certain class. I will list the characters from each class in groups, and provide a letter rating for each stat, giving you an indication on how likely a character is going to excel in each stat. The rating is based on a combination of the character's base stats and their stat growths, as well as their starting level and stat caps for their class. The ratings range from A to E, A being the most likely to excel and E the least likely to excel. A quick note: These ratings aren't designed to compare characters of seperate classes, except in the case of similar classes being grouped together, such as Warrior and Berserker. Using the ratings in this section to compare Jill to Marcia, for example, was not intended. ------------------------- Lord ------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ ****************************************************************************** VI. Alternate Opinions ****************************************************************************** This section contains opinions of the characters that have been sent to me via e-mail. I think it's important to hear many views on the characters, as Fire Emblem has a random based system and one person's view could wind up vastly different than another's. In order to draw a more accurate conclusion, it's necessary to study an assortment of opinions, since it is impossible to average a random value, as seems to be the most popular way of assessing a character's potential. The opinions in this section are used with permission from the sender. Ike ~~~ :::Sui89::: Well, let's just say he's beyond awesome. Maxing four stats is always a good thing. All of his stats are just amazing, even Magic, not that he needs it. But his stats aren't even necessarily what makes him amazing. It's his mastery skill: Aether. That thing just cuts through everything. *Dark Knight goes down in two hits* Priceless. Soren ~~~~~ :::Sui89::: First of all, why isn't he a druid? He fits that part better than a Sage. His sage look is a dress and it's purple. Why? God knows... Anyway, killing machine. He maxes magic and has great speed, and other stats too. His only let down is his obviously low strength, which will make it harder for him to use the higher level tomes. But that aside, he's the best Sage by a long shot. Mia ~~~ :::Sui89::: Meh. She's all right. I'm kind of disappointed in her. She's not really that great for a Swordmaster. She comes in at a low level, in a level with tons of lance users. Not easy to use. Add that to being constantly RNG screwed in the strength department, with an OKAY ability to dodge, and you really shouldn't be using her. Honestly. Rolf ~~~~ :::Sui89::: He's 8 and got a weapon in his hands....why? Anyway, just 'cause he's a child doesn't seem to matter. His stats are decent enough. He's got great dodge PLUS rediculous defense for an archer. Seriously, an archer shouldn't have that much defense. For some reason, Snipers in FE9 get a bonus critical too, so he criticals like mad, since he's already got good stats to give him an already high critical rate. His only real weakness is his kind of low strength. He tends to get RNG screwed on that. But it's not so horrible that he'll be unusable, so you won't mind. Mist ~~~~ :::Sui89::: Underrated? Yes, but not by much. She can heal. She's pretty poor at it though. Low magic makes for not-so-great healing abilities. She gets a horse after promotion, so she can move after acting. She gets a sword too. Why? Her strength is horrible. At least after promotion Rhys gains Light Magic. Mist just gains not-so-great swords. So basically she's mediocre at healing and mediocre at attacking. Not bad, but generally not good enough to warrent a full spot on your team. Marcia ~~~~~~ :::Sui89::: Pretty classic for a Pegasus Knight. Not so great defense is made up for by a superior ability to dodge. Add into the equation that she's got decent strength (assuming that you haven't been RNG screwed) and she can fly, and there's really no reason you shouldn't have her on your team. Some argue she's worse than Jill, but I hate Jill, so I say no. =P Zihark ~~~~~~ :::Sui89::: Much better. This "power" Swordmaster has much more of a balance over his stats. Sacrifices a few points of skill for quite a bit more points of strength, making him much more useful. Give him a good skill like gamble to take care of his good skill and critical rate and he's a good character to use. Granted, he's still no Fir or Rutger though... Sothe ~~~~~ :::Sui89::: Blossom! More growths! Uh, no. Blossom is a bunch of crap. It gives you the false sense that Sothe will actually become something decent. Now, he would be if he could actually promote. But alas, no such luck. Blossom also makes it nearly impossible to use him already since he gains about one third of the exp. he should. Add that to being able to do about 1 or 2 damage to MAGES tops, and he's not worth your time or effort. Jill ~~~~ :::Sui89::: Meh. Just meh. What have they done to my poor Dragon Riders? Her stats aren't very good. Honestly. I LOVE this class. She's the first Dragon Rider EVER where I had to take her out of my team 'cause she sucked. Plus look at the graphics on the wyverns now. What's up with that? I can hardly stand to even look at them now. Stefan ~~~~~~ :::Sui89::: Prepromote? Yuck. Normally, that's what I'd say. However, Stefan's one of those prepromotes that actually doesn't suck. He's comes in with certain stats that are already almost maxed. He should max or at least come close to maxing strength, which is always a good thing for a Swordmaster. His only let down is that you'll notice a drop in his ability to dodge towards the later chapters. His defense isn't so good either, so that might pose a problem. He's still good though. Reyson ~~~~~~ :::Sui89::: Well, statwise he's not so great. Decent Speed and Luck I guess. Everything else is meh. I don't know. It's a good thing he doesn't need his stats to rock both my world and yours. He fits the "dancer" role, so he can make a character move again. That's his benefit is his human form, PLUS the added bonus of healing all adjacent allies roughly 10 HP each. As if that little healing bonus weren't already enough, in his Laguz form, he has the added effect of making ALL adjacent allies move again. That's free healing PLUS up to 4 extra turns per phase. Now that's awesome. Lucia ~~~~~ :::swordmaster1324::: Lucia comes in around Chapter 25 or so, if I'm not mistaken, giving her 5 or so chapters to grow only 8 levels. Karla on the other hand came 2 maps before the end and only at level 5, which for some people is too much work to level her up quickly. However, most people don't realize that most of their other characters are nearly maxed out at level 20. Leveling her up isn't really that difficult. I found that you can easily max Karla out on the level before the final chapter, and she comes quite in handy, albeit not as strong as Guy or Karel, but with more luck. In my opinion, Karla is better overall than Lucia because her Skill and Speed can be maxed out, whereas Lucia cannot without the aid of items given the short amount of levels she has left to grow. If you have something you want to say about the characters, see my contact information and send me an e-mail explaining your stance. I may put your opinions in my guide in a future update. ****************************************************************************** VII. Skill List ****************************************************************************** A new aspect of the American-released Fire Emblem titles is the ability to assign Skills to characters that add to their effectiveness in battle. A system similar to this was introduced in the older, Japan-only Fire Emblem games of the Super Nintendo era. Each class has a set amount of Skill Points that limit the number of Skills the character can use. Most characters have 20-25 Points to go with, and Skills can take up anywhere from 5 to 20 Points to assign. Some characters come with preset Skills when they join your army. In most cases, these Skills can be removed, but be careful! Once you remove a Skill from a character, it is gone permanently. That goes for both preset Skills that characters come with, and the Skills you assign yourself. The Skills themselves are separated into two different groups: Basic Skills and Master Skills. Basic Skills are the most common Skills, which normally use anywhere from 5 to 15 Skill Points to assign. These Skills can be assigned to any class that have enough Skill Points to use them. Add this Skills via scrolls obtained as you progress through the game. For example, if you find a Gamble scroll, you may now go into the Skills menu at your base and use the scroll to teach a character the Gamble Skill. Master Skills unique to a specific class. Not just any Master Skill can be assigned to any class. Each class has a specific Master Skill and cannot learn a Master Skill of another class. They can only be assigned to promoted classes and Laguz, and cost 20 Points. In order to assign a Master Skill, you must use a rare scroll called "Occult". These Occult Scrolls teach any promoted class or Laguz class their unique Master Skill. You get very few Occult Scrolls over the course of the game, so choose how you're going to use them wisely. Below, I will list all of the Skills available in the game, and tell you what each Skill does, what causes the Skill to activate, and what, if any, characters come with the Skill pre-assigned. I won't include the Capacity for Master Skills, as they all cost 20 Points to assign and therefore it does not need to be repeated. Before I begin, I'd like to recommend Rick Dykes's Skill FAQ, available at GameFAQs.com for more comprehensive and detailed information about each Skill. ------------------------- 1.
