If you examine them, you will get wings that you combine with the statues, which you put on the scale to open the secret passage way!

Unable to open book of evil....tried to examine it, but nothing???Guest answered:
you have to go to examine, then turn the book so that you are able to see the pages, then when you click, it should say something like "open it?"
