Question for The Hobbit

Stuck between the Lonely Mountain and the gate at the ruin of Dale.

This is the gate that has a save point on the other side just right after you decend from the Lonely Mountain.

There's no hostile animals around. One screen down, you can climb the ledge and walk back to view the save point on the other side.

Several more screens south, there's a couple of patches of dry-up grass that you can't cross.

Cannot find the key anyway.

If anyone has found out where the key is and how to get it, please share your hard-earned knowledge.

It is greatly appreciated.

Use the walking stick to smash down the grass. That's the only way to cross it. A little further, near the river, you'll find a chest with the key.
